| 76816 | 2002-09-05 22:59:00 | Some Advice Please! My son swapped a CDRom for another, called Counter Strike, which he is bringing up here on the Weekend and wants to install on my computer. Can someone tell me what its all about. He is only 9 years old and may be too young. Can it be played with the MS sidewinder pad, or do you need something a little more elaborate. Do you need to be connected to the internet, or is one of those games where you can play alone. I usually limit him to games like Midtown Madness, Zoo Tycoon etc and he says all his mates play games like Counter whatsit, but thought I would ask advise here first BALDY:-) |

This gets on my goat when you get parents saying things like GTA3 should be banned because it's too violent etc and they bawl and run screaming to the media (which is dumb cos it means free advertising for GTA3) cos they bought it for their 13yo kid and theres swering and blood and guts etc (see this months PCWorld) but on the box is a sticker that clearly says "R18" so it's really the parents fault in the first place - if they are dumb enough to buy their 13yo kids a R18 game, they are dumb enough to qualify for the darwin awards. Good stuff Baldy for asking. Personally, my 9yo will have better things to do when he reaches that age - constructive things and games like Gran Turismo blah blah I shuddup now. Oh yea, your sidewinder should cut it. Long as you have a mouse and key board too :D |

Now she's into Civ and AOE instead. However, its really a case of asking yourself whether your 9Y0 is a sensible lad or not. If he's going to play online he'll be mixing with a lot of people - some of them could have negative effect on him. Plus he will be picked on becos everyone seem to think under 12YO kids playing CS are immature and tend to cheat. But just like music - you're not going to be able to restrict him everywhere. He could end up playing CS at his mate's place instead. |

| 76820 | 2002-09-05 23:54:00 | Personally I'd say it's a bad idea. CS is an online game and it is violent. The whole point is to kill the other team, there are blood sprays on the wall etc. But of even more concern is the type of language he will be exposed to online. CS players aren't the most mature campers in the paddock and the text discussions that go on during play are highly likely to be full of profanity, sexual references and genral gutter talk. I'm speaking from experience, BTW. |

| 76821 | 2002-09-05 23:55:00 | Thanks for the input guys. He's pretty sensible. I installed a demo version of MaxPayne off a PCWorld cover disc for him, but he asked me to uninstall it, as he had a bad dream about it LOL. I will check out the classification stickler on the box when he brings it up here. He knows the drill. If it hasn't got a G, he won't get to play it. I'll look after it for him LOL BALDY:-) p/s - Should have mentioned in my original posting that we only have dial-up internet, so in the meantime online gaming is out of the question. |

| 76823 | 2002-09-06 00:01:00 | Not if he bought CS retail he won't, and it sound slike he might have. | Biggles (121) | ||
| 76824 | 2002-09-06 00:18:00 | o yes......i forgot about the retail ver. but also if hes not going to be playing online he will need to download some bots to play against. podbot works quite well. i finally found a site with a huge amount of waypoint files for podbot..........yippeee fragging time :) | tweak'e (174) | ||
| 76825 | 2002-09-06 00:34:00 | Bruce and Tweak'e Not really sure what disc he has (better not be a copied one) He was that excited when he rang last night, he could hardly talk. Will more than like find its a PS disc when arrives with it LOL Down loading pods sounds far to involved for me. Might just scan a R20 sticker and tell him he's too young to play it just now. I'll be the demon dad for the weekend, but what the hell! BALDY:-) |
