77166 2002-09-06 23:46:00 on start up last night, my lovely computer told me that it "cannot find win.com unable to continue loading windows". This mornin when i booted up, still the same trouble, so i booted into safe mode, no probs. I thought it may have been my Virus Scanner (AVG) doin silly things, so i uninstalled it (dont worry got setup files and reg.#'s), rebooted. Still the same problem, my mum came in and suggested "tones you should just turn it off, and then turn it back on again", not wanting to be disrespectful towards my elders i did. To no avail. I did a step by step start up, i said yes to everything except something along the lines of "c:\progam files\bitware c:\program files\win98rk" and now im logged in and everything is running.

I dare not reboot untill i can sorta figure out whats going on. I tried using a start up disc, but had trouble understanding all the options it offered me (dumb i know!)

I had done a search of the pressf1 archives which didnt really shed any light onto the matter for me.

Any help would be muchly appreciated

Thankies

77169 2002-09-07 02:08:00 I've never really liked AVG, It was a bit of a Hog of my last systems resources, that was about a year ago, and apparently it's improved a bit. Now I'm running bare and just use http://www.housecall.antivirus.com whenever I feel like it, i'm usually pretty safe, and haven't got a virus using this method for the past year while using it..
