77151 2002-09-06 21:42:00 I have a laptop (Compaq 721) that comes with system restore CD that sets up XP Home perfectly. The only problem is that I require XP Pro so that I can log on to my workplace network. Whenever I have tried to simply 'upgrade' using a Windows XP Pro CD it wipes all of my current windows files and I lose my settings and any software I have installed. Does anyone know how I can convert XP Home to Pro to enable the additional network functions without having to do a complete rebuild. Sunray (1799)
77152 2002-09-06 22:11:00 You should be able to carry your settings over, by using the feature in XP that exports them, then import them into Pro (assuming Pro has the feature) Search the XP Help for "files and settings transfer wizard"

It is not possible (to my knowledge) to fully reload/upgrade any version of Windows without losing the functionality of most installed applications.

This comes about with the "new" registry not being populated with the keys for the installed applications, when it is reloaded afresh. It would be a recipe for disaster to try and attach the old registry as well I believe.

I would assume it would only do this if you specified a new install on the partition your current system files are located. Here's an obvious question; are you sure you specified "upgrade"?

>Whenever I have tried to simply 'upgrade' using a Windows XP Pro CD >it wipes all of my current windows files and I lose my settings and any >software I have installed.

If this is the case then wouldn't a clean install of XP pro be more beneficial and less frustating ..

www.microsoft.com
You can often contact Microsoft or the reseller and they will give you free advice if it is a fault of their product

77157 2002-09-08 09:19:00 Thanks to all that responded....brain must have gone into cyberspace as I was installing XP Pro from a CD boot instead of running the CD from windows. A cold boot on the CD does not give the upgrade option but the installation from the CD via windows does.

Many thanks as all is now well with the world and my laptop now talks to my server at work.

Cheers
