| 77074 | 2002-09-06 12:46:00 | Windows XP Professional. CD-ROM is drive D. CD-RW is drive E. Backup Wizard. I am attempting to use start/accessories/system tools/backup. As I go through the steps,I come to "backup files & settings". It doesn't matter what I choose in the next box of options of what to back up, as it makes no different to the problem I am experiencing. If I choose to save to the "A" drive, all is ok! It will tell me either that the drive is empty, or with a Floppy in it, up pops the "completing the Backup or Restore wizard"box. I can continue on to completion of the wizard & backup will commence. If I choose to browse to the CD-RW drive(E), I am shown a box called SAVE AS. In the feild SAVE IN, it says "CD Drive(E:)"; FILE NAME is "backup.bkf"; SAVE AS TYPE is "backupfiles(*.bkf)" I click SAVE & I get taken back to "choose a place to save your backup" which shows as "E:\" and the word "backup" is in TYPE A NAME FOR THE BACKUP. When I click NEXT a box says "Backup Utility, the backup file name could not be used. "E:\backup.bkf" Please unsure it is a valid path & that you have sufficient access." I am in Administrator account. If I browse again & change the SAVE IN at the SAVE AS box to "CD drive(D:)", as soon as I select the (D) drive, a box appears Headed INSERT DISK & stating "please insert disk into drive D:". I don't get that message when I choose drive (E). It is as though the (E) drive is not being recognised even though the drive works fine in reading & writing data in normal day to day use. It appears listed under "My Computer". On another note: What I want to do is backup my files, not windows xp itself, so if I had to do a format I could restore applications, drivers, folders & files to what they are right now. Lets assume I get a fix to my Wizard problem, what do I choose to backup so I get what I want but not the operating system? All suggestions will be appreciated! AND.........The answers need to be put in a way that does not assume that I know more than I do. You may be able to do it with your eyes shut, I can't, so pretend you are showing a person for the very first time. That way, I won't have to guess what intermediate steps have been left out. Thanks. |
