2002-09-06 06:16:00 | I'm searching for a driver (well a .inf actually) for a DEC VRC15-K4 15" monitor. I search www.driverguide.com and came up with nothing, and DEC doesn't exist anymore, so I can't go searching there. Any ideas? Or does anyone actually have one? (yeah right!) :D Mike.

2002-09-06 06:24:00 | It's a monitor which was used with Alpha Stations. About all I can find in a quick look is that it is SVGA NI. So a standard SVGA driver should do it. Google finds a lot of people who want to sell them ... at avrious prices. It's also listed in a Compaq page of Alpha options.

I did an FCC search and it told me that it was a Sampo, and Sampo don't have any old drivers on their site. I don't know what model Sampo it is either. I have it running fine, but am desiring to do some "testing" on it, so want to use the specific driver, which admittedly I used to have, but happened to "lose" it when I formatted my computer about a year ago :8}. Since you seem to know a little ;) can you tell me what the small plug (slightly smaller than a cdrom audio plug that plugs into your sound card) is that's just next to the VGA input plug on the back of the monitor? Mike. |

2002-09-06 09:06:00 | I came up with this specification: VRC15-K4 15"(13.9"VIEWABLE IMAGE SIZE) HIGH-RESOLUTION COLOR MONITOR FLAT SQUARE INVAR CRT, 0.28MM DOT PITCH, VGA TO 1024X768 @75HZ, MPRII, ENERGY STAR, HD15 MALE TO MALE VIDEO CABLE, SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE OPERATION, LIGHT GRAY ENCLOSURE from this site (www.compaq.com) Havent found a driver yet though. If the monitor has digital controls, it's just possible that the connector at the back next to the VGA socket is for plugging in a "black box" to adjust some settings digitally that cant be set manually via the buttons. One of the Compaq monitors had this feature for adjusting pin-cushion, there being no internal trim pot, or user control, the model FS150 I think from memory.

Maybe I should start using Google :) Sounds like that's what the plug probably does - I didn't think it could have been used for actual picture, so it'd have had to have been some kind of control thing Mike. |

2002-09-07 03:58:00 | My search on google was for "vrc15". It's odd that Alta Vista didn't find anything: that search engine was a Digital ("DEC" -- Digital Equipment Corporation) product. Google is brilliant. I sort of know DEC type device names, but never worked with anything "that" modern. I have managed to connect a 5.25" floppy to my microVax, though.

2002-09-07 08:08:00 | If only a more complete spec for the monitor could be found including horizontal frequency, ICMProfile and whether DPMS is supported then it would be easy to write your own driver file . Here is one based on some guesswork of specs, copy and paste to a text editor and call it DEC . inf Put it in c:\windows\inf Inf is a hidden file . When you call up a list of hardware in the change monitor settings, DEC will appear . ;Monitor INF file for DEC monitor [version] signature="$CHICAGO$" Class=Monitor Provider=%MFg% [Manufacturer] %Mfg%=DEC [DEC] %VRC15-K4%=VRC15-K4, Monitor\VRC15-K4 [VRC15-K4] DelReg=ClearPrev . DelReg AddReg=VRC15-K4 . AddReg [ClearPrev . DelReg] HKR,MODES HKR,,MaxResolution HKR,,DPMS HKR,,ICMProfile [VRC15-K4 . AddReg] HKR,"MODES\1024,768",Model,,30-70,50-75,+,-" HKR,,MaxResolution,,"1024,768" HKR,,DPMS,,1 HKR,,ICMProfile,1,9 [Strings] MonitorClassName="Monitor" Mfg="DEC" VRC15-K4="DEC VRC15-K4"

2002-09-07 10:00:00 | Hey well that might work :) I never thought about writing my own if I could find specs... maybe I should start doing that - give me something new to learn. <copies and pastes> I'll see if this works :) Mike.

2002-09-07 10:05:00 | hmmm... Win XP didn't really like that, although it didn't make the screen not work :) Mike.

2002-09-07 10:51:00 | Oh, Win XP? Maybe that has a different format, I'll try and find out. MS should have some info on .inf files. I tried it with Win98SE and my monitor which has a higher spec, and it was ok. Really all these inf files do is to specify the frequencies and max resolution so that they are not exceeded. Thats why a MS generic driver is usually ok. You could try lowering the ICMProfile to 7 instead of 9. HKR.. ICMProfile,1,7 But I havent found out yet what those parameters actually do, except associated somehow with colour.
