76941 2002-09-06 06:07:00 Generally I prefer 800x600 display and small fonts with my 17" monitor (and Win98SE setup). Sometimes change to 1024x768, in which case I select "Large Fonts" from Display Properties-Settings-Advanced.

When I do that the icons in the System Tray also change size, getting bigger and annoyingly more 'pixellated' and ragged.
If I choose Small Fonts, the icons shrink and become more appropriate
for 1024x768.

Anyone any idea why font size selection should affect icon size, and is there any way to prevent it?

76942 2002-09-06 06:10:00 I don't know, but I'm wondering if the icons may scale to the height of the taskbar, so if the fonts are bigger, the task bar would probably be slightly bigger to accomodate the larger font, and so the icons scale up to the "appropriate" height.

76943 2002-09-06 06:11:00 Its probably just that the icons are bitmaps. They have a fixed number of pixels. When you change the size of text, the icons are scaled to match, and since they haven't got any more pixels for a larger size, pixels are repeated to get, effectively, bigger pixels. Thus the ragged edges. You would need a complete set of icons to suit each text size to avoid this. Ask Bill to include that in the next release. :D Graham L (2)
76944 2002-09-06 06:28:00 I should have added that the icons in the Quick Launch area dont change, and neither do the Desktop icons with changing font size, only the System Tray icons. Terry Porritt (14)
76945 2002-09-06 06:32:00 You expect consistent behaviour between different elements of a desktop? Graham L (2)
76946 2002-09-06 06:33:00 Mike could be right, maybe the time display in the System Tray is the controlling factor. Terry Porritt (14)
76947 2002-09-06 06:35:00 You're too much of a cynic, Graham :)
Im more trusting and niaive.

76948 2002-09-06 06:40:00 Yep, that would be right, changing font size won't alter desktop icons as there is a separate setting for them. The Quick Launch toolbar is made up from buttons (as you can see when you hover over them), the button size shouldn't change so neither will the icon.

However, as Mike says the system tray is just a bunch of bitmaps and scales to match the font size used.

Of course I'm right... I'm always right. When I'm not, refer to rule number 1 :D
