| 76884 | 2002-09-06 01:54:00 | Am considering the purchase of an Asus 16X Dvd drive, but understand that this drive gives you 4 chances before it locks itself to a certain zone... does the software above located at the url below bypass this problem? I am aware that you can reset the zone to region 5 by holding the disc open and play button down at the same time during boot-up... but wondered if this was another alternative... www.dvdidle.com Cheers! Has anyone used this or any DVD tweaking tool on a rpc-2 drive? I'm trying to figure out how it could circumvent the lock mechanism? Does it do anything to the firmware? |

| 76887 | 2002-09-06 04:29:00 | Region Killer works with both RPC1 and RPC2 drives - it fools Windows into believing that the drive hasn't been locked (so you need it running when you watch DVDs. I can't remember where I got it from, but ask JM, cause he sent me to it. Mike. |

The firmware on dvd drives work independent of any software running on ones system. Meaning the only way to change a drive with rpc-2 firmware is to update the firmware with an rpc-1 firmware for that drive. The DVD drive I have is locked (fortunately i know how to overcome this). But before I did I used apps like region killer and dvd genie and it didn't work ... my dvd was still locked and in order to play other regions i had to change the region. This of course decremented the region counter. Then there are the DVD tweaking tools which I assumed only work on the software level; such as DVD players to make it region free. Anyone have any thoughts on this? |

The way Region Killer works is to tell Windows that the HARDWARE hasn't been locked, so the region can be changed, even if the drive itself has been changed. I'm not sure though if this actually works (thats what they say happens) as my drive is RPC1, so don't have problems with different regions, except when it comes to some DVD content that requires a specific region to be set, then I use Region Killer to tell Windows its set to that specific region. Also I believe that if you're drive is already RPC2 region locked, a firmware upgrade will not work - you have to do the firmware upgrade before they drive is locked. Mike. |

| 76890 | 2002-09-06 06:29:00 | I found this on an old post by helvista The good news is you are able to reset your region counter. To do this follow the instructions below ... also note that this is NOT a hack but a legitimate use of functions that came with the E616 model. *To reset region counter for Asus DVD E616 Model: 1. Turn off your PC (not restart, but turn off). 2. Locate the "play & stop buttons" (the 2 buttons on the far right of the drive). While holding down these buttons turn on your system. 3. Keep holding down the buttons while your system goes through the boot process. When you see that your system has detected your drive OR you have held the buttons down for approx 5-6 secs after turning your PC on then let go. Your system should startup normally after that. If you find that your system is hanging then it means you have held down the 2 buttons too long ... simply restart the process. Once your O/S is loaded check to see if your region counter has reset. If not then you haven't held down the "play & stop" buttons long enough. If that's the case restart the process. Don't worry, you won't damage anything. Well, not unless you're using a sledge hammer to hold the buttons down . /I crack myself up .... Resetting you region counter allows you to play DVDs from different regions, and to change the regions as many times as you like. elby.ch |

Mike, just curious. Since you have an rpc-1 drive do you have prob's with DVD's that require DVD drives to be locked b4 it can be played? |

I use Region Killer to tell Windows that my drive is on a specific region, and the DVD works. Mike. |

| 76893 | 2002-09-07 01:02:00 | don't forget you can rip the dvd to harddrive (takes around 4-5gig) and watch from this copy. Then delete. Smartripper takes maybe45 mins. This has worked several times for me when I have stuffed around with the firmware settings and get frustrated with it not working. I get scared when screwing with the firmware in dos that I might break it. | drsteve (1777) | ||
