76906 2002-09-06 06:51:00 That could be it. Big files "test" software, sometimes destructively.:D I've done that a few times on mainframes.]:) Graham L (2)
76907 2002-09-10 03:00:00 Dude.....good man.....now that I think back the problem started just after work sent me on a Norton Corporate edition course....I took a copy home and installed it to have a play........bugger me :-)

Tested it copying a 450 file and it blue screened....disable NAV and tried again and all was well.....no more available RAM dropping to zero

Got a blue screen a couple of minutes later but that was an irq_not_equal blah blah blah........have had that one pop up before though....no real biggy :-)

Cheers

76908 2002-09-10 04:23:00 In other words, bad programming. There's a lot of that about. :D

Either Nortons are "making it go faster" by ignoring the result code from requests to the memory manager, or the memory manager programmers at MS are incompetent. Or both. ;-)

76909 2002-09-12 05:42:00 Thanks again for you help guys........not bad seeing as it is the first time I have posted on here :-) mongrel (1788)
76910 2002-09-12 07:29:00 No problem, we do it because we enjoy it. Why not chuck a complaint to Nortons (Symantec). Or is it not a registered copy ;-) If so, complain from work ... you *might* score a free copy if you tell them about a fundamental cockup like this. Graham L (2)
76911 2002-09-12 09:37:00 I don't know if this is a related problem or not. I was having frequent blue screens for no apparent reason. Running XP with only 128ram, had it lifted to 256ram & have not had one since, m/c runs faster as well. will probably go for 512ram & settle for that. Poppa John

Am I tempting fate saying no more "blues" ? P J

76912 2002-09-12 22:45:00 I am running 384mb....my 512 got fried :-( Well I am happy to say that I have not had another blue screen since removing NAV.....

Fingers crossed it stays that way......

Try turning off DMA for the drive.

Other things to try: new drivers from your motherboard manufacturer for your chip set and if it isn't already, making sure that the drive is the master and perhaps also the only one on the IDE channel.
