2002-09-06 09:11:00 | So I don't have to go to the house keeping of dual booting, I was considering buying something second hand from trademe to tinker with linux on, I was wondering Min Specs wise what would run it smoothly <I am acquiring the latest distributions, so bear in mind it'll need some power> I also will likely turn the machine into a server for a home network at some point if that makes a difference. Basically I want to broaden my OS horizons as some company which shall remain nameless gets on my nerves with all its multitude of "shenanigans"

If you just want text command based mode you could probably run it on a 486 with 16mb :) Mike. |

2002-09-06 10:59:00 | Using one of the latest distros & running Open Office & the like in the GUI, you wouldn't want to go any less than a 350MHz & whack 128Mb of ram into it 256 if you can. Anything less & you'll be disappointed especially running Office. | Stumped Badly (348) | |
2002-09-07 12:04:00 | Excellent, I was concerned by jumping in at the latest distribution I was asking for a hefty sum $$$ wise, I believe I will grab a celeron 500mhz with 128 sd ram could always use it as Art Deco when I get sick of it and upgrade ;-)

2002-09-07 12:48:00 | i got SUSE 8.0 running on a machine that is my web/storage server and gateway for the other PC to the world. It has run continuously without problem since day one about 5 or 6 weeks ago. By comparisn my windows box NEEDS rebooting daily, it apart from having CDRW, Zip, and 2 tiny HDDs it is identical. machine specs: VA 503+ mother board 405 meg, socket 7 AMD cpu thingy 128 meg of ram 80 gig HDD on linux box, 20+30 gig HDDs on 98 box personal cred: almost clueless with linux It's going to take me a while to get doing everything i want, but one of the beautiful things about linux, is that it will run reasonably well on a doorstop. Linux is logical, dispite the fact that i currently need 2 weeks to do what needs to be done each week, i have managed to S-L-O-W-L-Y learn how the thing works, just by asking one or 2 questions here, and applying the knowledge gained directly, and from links provided. Its a learning process, but makes much more sense than windows did when i first got into computing.
