77478 2002-09-08 00:59:00 just extracted files from my original win98 discs (havin touble with win.com) went through the microsoft help file.

Now it said after i have extracted the file into windows and pressed ENTER i have to "type the following line, and then press ENTER:
ren c:\windows\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com

Where does one type this? I rebooted and got rejected by windows and typed it in there, nothing. Tried it in the run box...nothing.
Its probably something really simple too!

thx tones

77479 2002-09-08 01:28:00 Ren is the DOS command for rename - same as renaming in Windows. You will have to boot to DOS to do this as Win.com is used by Windows so I doubt whether it will let you change it in a Windows environment. parry (27)
77480 2002-09-08 03:15:00 i exit'd into dos, (or in my case just rebooted and got told it couldn't load windows :P)and typed in that command, it said:
Invalid parameter - c:\windows\win.com

any ideas/

77481 2002-09-08 03:25:00 You did type the command exactly as you showed it in your first posting?

AHA! ... I was carefully doing a [ p r e ] to echo what you had ... and realised: What you need is ren c:\windows\win.cnf win.com (I think ...:D

DOS can be a bit funny about too many paths in a command.

77483 2002-09-08 05:19:00 When you boot, hold down F8, then choose the "command prompt" option from the menu. This will take you to a "pure" DOS mode which will not have any of the Windows files loaded. antmannz (28)
77484 2002-09-08 05:19:00 I think its telling you that win.com exists in that directory.

try renaming win.com to win.old

ren c:\windows\win.com win.old

Then as before?

77485 2002-09-08 06:04:00 If all else fails use your startup disk and select command prompt only. If you havent got one, create one by selecting ... Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add Remove Programs-Startup Disk tab. parry (27)
77486 2002-09-08 06:36:00 i did try it through the "pure dos mode" earlier, still no luck :| tones_malones (611)
77487 2002-09-08 06:38:00 Try as godfather says:

1. Rename win.com to win.old
2. Rename win.cnf to win.com
