77447 2002-09-07 22:44:00 I have an older system and wish to upgrade. My main concerns at this stage are the motherboard and cpu.

I have a Microstar M6TBA mobo and running a celeron 466 cpu.
Basically I'm buying a new case, power supply, HD, mobo, cpu and fitting my existing floppy, cd/rw and graphics card.

I don't think I can afford the new P4 with 533MHz system bus but I want a mobo that will be compatible with those spec's later when the chips get cheaper.I will prob go for the P4 2.0 400MHz (northwood).

As for the mobo something that will be able to take the latest Intel chips and supporting DDR 333 and RDRAM(if thats possible).
How do I know if the mobo will support the upcoming 3GHz P4?

I have read so many reviews I can't make a decision. I am going to be mainly using the machine for games and multi media applications and would like to purchase something not 'top end' but sorta close to it as best value for money is rather important at this stage.I have Geforce 2 64MB and will consider upgrading this in the future.
I am confused about some reviews I have read in the 'PC World" Top 10 dream machines. Such as an Athlon xp2000+ obtaining a higher benchmark than a P4-2530. Now I know that FBS and L2 cache are important factors and the athlon has the lowest spec but gets the highest score, ..... confused.

77448 2002-09-07 23:34:00 firstly PLEASE repley to your old postings rather than spam the board with same one all the time.

ok with that out of the way, what is your budget.

general speaking AMD cpu are faster for the $$$ however they run hotter so pay attention to cooling.

the intel cpu does run faster in certain programs. all depends on which program you use ;-)

if you are an intel fan then i suggest getting a good name board that has 533 fsb and use the slower cpu's.

you won't find a motherboard support both ddr and rdram. ddr is cheaper and is the default standard at the mo. only those 533fsb cpu's can make use of the bigger bandwidth rdram provides.

just remember mhz isn't everything.

77449 2002-09-08 06:40:00 sorry for the spam but wasn't getting any joy with the old posting.

I have been doing some research into motherboards and have decided to go with an intel cpu (I think)! Anyway have come to the conclusion that choosing a good chipset is now high on my list. Is the Via KT333 as good as its cracked up to be as it seems on par with intel chips that cost a lot more?
My budget for upgrading is around the $1500 mark.

77450 2002-09-08 09:27:00 kt333 chipset is for AMD cpu's not intel.

make sure you get a good motherboard that is well supported.
