2002-09-07 01:44:00 | I inherited a 486, I wanna do something cool with it.... can you guys throw some ideas at me in terms of an alternative OS (read NOT microsoft!) Anything.... linux distros, open source and free OS's etc... I was hoping with something with some sort of nice GUI, but I'm not afraid of command lines.... Needs sound, cd-rom and modem support preferably. Thank ya.

2002-09-07 01:45:00 | oh, I should have said, even suggestions for alternative shells on win95 or win3.11 would be cool... | loser (538) | |
2002-09-07 02:02:00 | Well, I've run 98SE mint on an 80486 DX 50Mhz with only 28MB, make sure it's drive isnt compressed and that you give it a nice juicey sized Swap File. If you want a different UI, try www.wincustomize.com, look for WindowBlinds and.or Desktop X especially. Desktop X is the main thing for changing the GUI, but both will eat away at your system resources very quickly. BTW, After a while, I managed to get 98 MB RAM in the thing and it went WILD! hehe, I'm currently giving Red Hat Linux 7.2 (7.3 is out I think) a shot, so I'll let you know, It's slower on my laptop that Win98Se and even Win2K! so I dunno. | 77259 | 2002-09-07 02:16:00 | something cool... ha ha ha. ok, it's not really "cool", but hey I'm a software engineering student... i was just meaning a new OS. that's kinda cool for me. so I'm a geek :D I have these visions of finding some wicked OS and my crappy old 486 running blisteringly fast.... fast enough to kick my athlon 1700+'s ass... now that would be cool. the 486 is a 33mhz, w/ 8mb ram. urgh. not much chance of it running win98, let alone going so fast that it will launch into orbit!

2002-09-07 02:17:00 | oh and the HD is only 200mb! that alone kinda rules out anything above win95! | loser (538) | |
2002-09-07 02:46:00 | i'm trying redhat 7.3 but with 26meg of ram its only text mode. need 64min. not sure about earlier distro's.

2002-09-07 03:03:00 | What you really need is a cool looking, minimal resource GUI for DOS. Maybe Desktop 2 (isgwww.cs.uni-magdeburg.de)? There's more here (members.cox.net).

2002-09-07 03:16:00 | I once used ToyBox 2, I think that's what it was called, it's about 0.2 MB Big, I'll see if I can get u a url, it's fast as gui for DOS, not a multi-tasker but! It lets you edit icons, it's fast and fun, brings back memories of the good old days thinking of that!! Hang on... www.kidsdomain.com try the bottom of the four for download! Chilling_Silence

2002-09-07 03:18:00 | Hey, This is soooooo what I remember from when I was a real little kid, ten years ago, this was what I was growing up on!!! If I've got enough junk left in the garage to make a 386 or something of the like, I might as well get this on it. I don't think it has networking support though! Chilling_Silence
