77498 2002-09-08 08:42:00 It is of course possible that you ALREADY have two files - one called win.com the other win.old.

Go into the windows directory and have a look:

cd\windows
dir win*.*

If both files exist - rename win.com as win.abc

77500 2002-09-08 08:49:00 Yep, got it in one. Heather P (163)
77501 2002-09-08 08:49:00 I dont know what c:\progra~1\win98rk . %path% is, but could be causing the conflict if this program is in memory . Yes uncheck it .

I wonder if creating a boot disk also copies accross config . sys and autoexec . bat or creates its own? May explain why you get the error when booting into DOS from Windows and using floppy .

Interested to know what happens .
Good luck!! :-)

77502 2002-09-08 08:59:00 I've been re-reading the post and see that there are a few mix ups in absolute versus relative paths.

An absolute path gives a file name and the entire path to it (drive and directory(s):
c:\windows\win.com is an absolute path.
(If the prompt says c:\ then typing ren windows\win.com windows\win.old is an absolute command)

Now me, I prefer a relative path. Change into the directory, list the file on the screen then change them:

cd\windows <enter>
dir win*.* <enter>
ren win.com win.old <enter>
ren win.cfg win.com <enter>
dir win *.* <enter>

Doing it this way means you can physically see exactly what you are doing.
