77488 2002-09-08 06:50:00 Hi Tones, heres some articles from MSKB. It looks as though you need to extract the files from within DOS. Have you tried this or did you extract the files in Windows then try to rename in DOS.

77490 2002-09-08 07:26:00 Ahh ding (light goes on). The problem is probably you are selecting the virtual drive instead of your CDR methinks. If your CD drive was D: before it will now be E:. When the boot disk loads it creates a virtual drive because all the files that you may want to use are too big, so they are compressed on the floppy then extracted to this virtual drive.

Do you know how to navigate around in DOS? To change drives type letter followed by colon and press enter. eg E:

To change directories use CD. Example to cgange directory from c:\Windows to E:\Win98\Test you would type...

E: <enter key>
CD Win98\test

77491 2002-09-08 07:32:00 Hi there,

First boot to DOS (F8 until you get a choice then command prompt only). You will get a nice black screen with the only helpful or otherwise comment on it being C:\>

Now try out a few DOS commands (type in each command, hit enter and see what happens):

dir

cd windows

cd\

cd windows

cd..

d:\

dir

e:\

dir

c:

cd windows

dir w*.*

dir win*.*

The above examples will give you some practice navigating through the drives and directories and viewing what is on them.

You may find that your CD if it is normally a d drive is now an e drive.
Have a play and see if you can find the files.

77492 2002-09-08 07:33:00 Also... to see what directories and files are on the CD you will need the DIR command. So thats CD to move between direcotries and DIR to see whats in em. Have a look at this site which briefly explains DOS commands ... www.computerhope.com parry (27)
77493 2002-09-08 07:34:00 small point - I've no idea how things became bold. I didn't do it. Promise. Heather P (163)
77494 2002-09-08 07:52:00 ok rightttttttttt.
restarted, pushed f8, went into command prompt

i managed to extract win.cnf to c:\windows and then to rename:

"ren win.com win.old" and got
"duplicate filename or already in use"

i think i need to go through all the posts and make up a step by steph what to do list!!

77495 2002-09-08 08:15:00 OK, so Win.com is still in RAM and thats why its saying that. My apologies, should have realised that.

I will have to follow the instructions myself to see what happens. Ive got Win98 on a laptop so if I have time I will have a go tonight then let you know - oherwise a Monday job :-)

77496 2002-09-08 08:24:00 Well just booted up laptop with Win98SE. From Windows selected Start-Shutdown-MsDOS Prompt

tried a test to see if i could rename ...

DOS currently has c:\windows> as the directory
Typed ren win.com win.old

No problems.

Strange that its saying that error. I do get that error however when I boot with WinMe as you have to boot in SafeMode to change names for that but not Win98.

cheers

77497 2002-09-08 08:38:00 hmmmmm...
this may be a long shot, but it seems to stop loading when this comes up:

path c:\progra~1\win98rk.%path%

i then saw it in the autoexec.bat bit of my msconfig.

rekon if i uncheck it that could help?
