77265 2002-09-07 03:42:00 You won't get a late Linux on a 200MB disk . 8MB is a *bit* small for any GUI . If you got RH4 . 2, that might fit . Slackware . . . again an earlier one, might be OK . People say that Debian can be set up with only what you want, too . All Linux will handle CDs, and modems . Sound with a card from 486 era is almost certainly OK .

I've got a DX33 running Linux . It had 8 MB when I installed, but I've bumped it up a bit since . I put Slackware 2 on it, in frustration at RH7 . 3 installing so much useless (to me) stuff and overfilling the 330MB disk . I installed only what I needed . It handles a SCSI 8mm tape for my network so data handling speed is no problem .

OS/2 would go OK . . . that's a nice OS . I've had it going on a 386SX20 with 4MB, and a 40MB disk . IBM say Warp 3 needs about 80MB . . .

Be requires more hardware, and the demo has to have 500MB of disk .

77266 2002-09-07 08:53:00 If you wanted to use it for something useful you could put SmoothWall (http://www.smoothwall.org) on it so that you can have a dedicated hardware based firewall. -=JM=- (16)

77268 2002-09-07 21:30:00 Here's another back to the future suggestion, plain vanilla DOS with an icon based graphical menu, and a DOS web browser.
For menus try www.simtel.net

qmiii31c.zip or starmu50.zip may give a windows type menu screen, but I havent tried them

A DOS web browser with dial up can be downloaded from:

This program was reviewed a few years ago by Tom Moffat in the Electronics Australia Magazine.

Then there are the alternative DOS like Freedos, 4Dos etc.
