| 77332 | 2002-09-07 05:15:00 | hi, i'm looking for a second hand computer, and i've come across many things, but one thing that i don't understand is the Proccessor chips (i think that's wot they're called :( ) Anyway, whats the difference between a P2 400mhz, and a P3 400mhz, and whats a celeron and AMD duron? 1 last thing - could someone rank all the chips in order (celeron, duron, P2, P4 etc) of best performance if they all had the same proccessing speed. Thanks in advance Cheers |

Celeron is Intel's cheaper version of a P3 or whatever - perform well enough, unless you need a very powerful system. AMD is the competition - another company. > 1 last thing - could someone rank all the chips in > order (celeron, duron, P2, P4 etc) of best > performance if they all had the same proccessing > speed. No. P2 is older, so slower, P4 is newer, generally 1ghz upwards, but if you want a comparison between the current CPUs on the market, you'll need to find someone completely unbiased towards one or the other, which is pretty difficult to find. Some say Intel (P4s) are better, others say AMD (Athlon XP) are better. Mike. |

If you have looked at any of PCWorlds system comparisons you will find that the same cpu (or processor) with the same RAM, but a different motherboard will run slower. So the motherboard and the type of RAM can have a big effect on the performance of cpu's. Another thing is the type of programs you will run on your computer as different cpu's and motherboard configurations perform better with graphics tasks, but fall over with computational tasks. A rough comparison would be that an AMD chip with the same Mhz rating as an Intel chip will perform better with most tasks. The Intel P4 chips are meant to be far better when used in combination with RD-Ram than when they use DDR-Ram, but the cost factors made DDR more prevalient. Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/ as this site can give some very intereting (although technical) chip comparisons. |
