| 77874 | 2002-09-09 05:08:00 | Installing an 80Gb 7200 rpm drive as the primary HDD and will relegate the existing 20Gb 5400 rpm drive as the secondary. The secondary disc will hold setup software from various CDs and floppies, and back up of key settings and data. Data is also backed up on CD. My question is how many partitions should I make on the primary? Im thinking at least two; one of 6Gb for operating system, swap file and program files. The second is for data files. Have read the FAQ on the process for partitioning. Should I consider more partitions, and for what reasons? At this stage the new drive capacity is 4x current capacity but for equivalent of NZD240 landed was considered good value now. |

I would suggest the bulk goes into a data partition with apps as well (if you stick to your 6Gb boot). Maybe one or two smaller ones (like 5-6Gb each) for other OS's or maybe to add back on to one of the other partitions if they need enlargement. I find that I always end up in a mess if I have too many. I have two drives with one partition on each at the moment and it is sooo much easier. robo. |

| 77877 | 2002-09-09 05:43:00 | it all depends on what os you are useing and how big the next os is likly to be. some programs will require to be installed on c. 6gig sounds ok. the rest of the drive it all depepnds on what u do with the pc. eg i have a mp3 partition, movie partition, main programs partition as well as os partition. make each one roughly 20 gig each. ie 6 os, 14 apps, 20mp3, 20 movies, 20 spare. keep the things you use most in c and d (fastest partitions) and the bulk storage items in the slower partitions. |

| 77881 | 2002-09-09 06:45:00 | with w2k/XP drive letter assigning isn't a problem but with win9x/me you need a program called letter assigner which assigns letters to the drive so when you add another drive the drive letters don't change. | tweak'e (174) | ||
