77861 2002-09-09 04:46:00 Hi
I just checked that FAQ and realised it didn't mention any program to manage them. Anyone got any recommendations?
I might add a reply onto the FAQ when we have a couple of good ones.
Must be easy and preferably work without sending money first.

77862 2002-09-09 08:50:00 Are you referring to FAQ #13, robo?

Not sure what you mean by a program to "manage them", you'll have to explain that a bit more.

Heather gave a link a while ago to a site where you can check file extensions, it's filext.com It tells you what program the extension belongs to as well as links to the program makers' sites where possible.

77864 2002-09-09 09:09:00 Hi Robo, there doesnt seem to be many around but I have found File Type Manager www.csc.uvic.ca which looks promising. I will let you know what I think of it. :-) parry (27)
77865 2002-09-09 09:32:00 Yes, that's what I meant, a file type manager.
Editing the properties in Explorer is awful for a geek, let alone a newbie.
Just wanted some method that was more usable.

77866 2002-09-09 09:49:00 Quite a powerful tool with lots of info about files and you can do all the usual things like adding/editing/deleting file types. Even shows orphaned file extensions.

However the documentation is very thin and doesnt explain what shell extensions etc mean. Even the seasoned PC user may struggle with some of this when looking at some things like ClassID's - I know nothing about them.

Definetly not one for the average punter and I dont see any real benefit over the native Windows one :-(

If I see another one I'll let you know.

77868 2002-09-10 11:43:00 do you mean something like properties plus? <goes searching for link> tweak'e (174)
77869 2002-09-10 11:48:00 If you mean what I think you mean, I just don't think the average user is comfortable keying in things like :

"C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\MMJB.exe" /AudioCD

or

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MSACCESS.EXE" /NOSTARTUP /SHELLSYSTEM [OpenDataAccessPage "%1", 1]

If you know what I mean. File Manager was way easier.
