77846 2002-09-09 00:57:00 A friend of mine has a HP Pavilion 6605 which states on the case that it has 64Mb of RAM, only the OS System resources says it only has 54Mb.
After talking to a sales rep, I was told that the video card was built into the motherboard and it was using the missing 10Mb of ram. Surely the OS would count all RAM the in the DIMM weather it was being used or not? Should I contact the commerce commission as I know of a least one other system (different model but still HP) that is the same.

77847 2002-09-09 01:15:00 The operating system will only tell you what it can use, if it thought it could use the lot it would crash when the video memory was subtracted.

In all the advertising I have seen, they always refer to "shared memory" and this is very common in most lower spec computers, HP and others.

I believe the term covers the use.

In truth it has got 64 Mb of RAM, so I doubt it is a CC issue. The RAM will be either 2 x 32 Mb sticks or 1 x 64 Mb stick, so it will not be faulty RAM. The specs for that PC suggest it uses 8 Mb of RAM for video. I think the video grabs a permanent 1 Mb on top of this for default start-up video, and then allocates up to the 8 Mb as needed. Another 1 Mb will be used for DOS compatability?. 54 + 8 + 1 + 1 = 64.

77849 2002-09-09 12:16:00 Note... My "FreeRam XP Pro" Program blows out a warning of low system resources at my set level of 10 %. What causes this low resources?..and what can I do to remedy this?..Cheers.. Kahawai_Chaser (166)
