78097 2002-09-10 01:41:00 Hi,

I'm considering in buying a new motherboard in the future .

You see, I have a Pentium III that has is type: Slot A or 1 . (Not sure which one) Its one of those that come in a cartridge form .

I need a new motherboard, as it wasn't designed for a Pentium 4 processor for an upgrade . Ive had this PC since 1999 .

The question, I would like to ask is,
if buying a brand new motherboard, would I also get the chips on it say: for video, bios, sound etc . . or do I have to buy these indiviudually?

Which motherboards are reliable or which do you recommend that I should buy?

I'm thinking: Intel, Chaintech [which I have at the moment] ausus??

FYI your P3 will be a Slot 1, as (I think) Slot A was only AMD chips (eg Athlon) not Intel chips (like P3).

Anyway, back to your question.

All motherboards have BIOS on them, so that's not something you'll need to worry about. Many now have video and sound built in, BUT these are usually quite cheap versions, and it's by far recommended that you buy these seperately, especially the video card (a lot of people have no problems with onboard sound, but a video card is recommended to be seperate). But you don't have to have them seperate if you don't want to. The seperate video cards and sound cards are more suited to people playing lots of modern games, watching DVDs, or creating high quality graphics. If you just want to type emails and use Word, and surf the net etc. you'll be fine with onboard video and sound.

I won't comment on motherboards, cause I don't know much about the current brands.

Apart from the Bios, does this also include any other chips that are necessary to work a computer from a brand new motherboard? (excluding a P4)

I don't want to find that after buying a brand new motherboard, that it won't work without any necessary chips that are required .

So would this mean in the end, I can buy a brand new motherboard, + P4 and put all my video cards, audio, modem, ram, hard disk etc . . . and I should have a computer up and running?

78100 2002-09-10 05:03:00 New P4 Motherboards have DDR2100 RAM modules so no your existing RAM won't work, The gigabyte GA-8sr533 has integrated 5 . 1 surround sound but only have an AGP 4x slot, so you must check your video card some older motherboards have 1x 2x and 4x compatable AGP Slots but this one, and most P4 motherboards sold today are ONLY 4x AGP . "Wrong AGP card fry motherboard (wrong voltage)"

Depending on your Hard drive you might be able to use the old cables but most Motherboards come with the new cables and if you put the wrong cable in it will come up with an error something about 80 pin cables . It will still boot but show an error at startup . if it does use the other cable .

typical street price for RAM is $148 for 256MB Legend DDR2100 (Lifetime limited Wnty)

For a motherboard try to get as new a motherboard as possible and scrimp on the chip (ie p4 1 . 8 as with the new motherboards you could get some CPU's in a year or so that would still kick butt tho second hand to put into the motherboard .
My mistake with my first computer nowhere to grow to in the future .

78101 2002-09-10 08:28:00 Hi Wayne,

Thanks. Oh well, looks like buying a brand new PC is a better option. At least this way, I don't have to go through all this hassle.

My hdd are segate with 80pins an I have 512 SDRam
