78181 2002-09-10 01:31:00 Every now and then when I start up my computer I get this buzzing noise instead of the normal booting up sound. Does anybody know what to do about it and what causes this?
Many thanks
Johanna (1010)
78182 2002-09-10 05:09:00 Is this buzzing sound coming from the speaker, or is it more a grinding sound, like a fan grinding??

78183 2002-09-10 05:25:00 No it's coming from the computer itself when I boot up, instead of the normal sound I get a sort of buzzing or grinding noise . Very strange. Johanna (1010)
78184 2002-09-10 05:31:00 Open the case, and have a look at the cables which are draped around inside it. If one of them has got a bit close to the fan on the CPU or a video card, it could be hitting the fan blades. This would normally keep making the noise after it starts, but perhaps it grinds off enough plasic insulation to clear it for a while, until gravity makes the cable sag a bit more. ;-)

However, it's not a healthy situation. The fan won't be running at full speed, and the cable will be damaged. Tie the cable safely away (use string ... sticky tape is not useful for this).

If it's not the problem, try turning the machin on and listening as close as you can get the the disk drives ... If a disk drive is noisy, that is Very Bad News. :-(

78185 2002-09-10 05:44:00 This problem has come up quite a few times recently. It might be a good candidate for a FAQ if anyone wants to tackle it.

Johanna, try having a look at these two threads to see if anything helps:
