78026 2002-09-09 09:46:00 New Warcraft 3 Patch

Blizzard bans 20 000 in map hack scandal
Blizzard has lived up to it's promise and banned (www.battle.net) 20 000 accounts that were found to be using the Warcraft map hack. Here's the official word:

September 6, 2002

Warcraft III Map Hack Users Banned

In keeping with our aggressive stance against hacks and cheats, we have closed 20,000 accounts that were found to be using Warcraft III map hacks, and removed their ladder records. In addition, the CD keys of those offenders have been banned from ladder play for two weeks. We will continue to monitor the Warcraft III realms for malicious players. Please note: repeat offenders can suffer permanent removal from Battle.net if they continue to use hacks.

We regret having to employ these extreme measures; however, certain unscrupulous players have impaired the game play of the Warcraft III community as a whole, and severe action continues to be warranted and required.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. If you would like to report additional instances of hacking or cheating, please contact us at hacks@blizzard.com. Thank you again for your continued support.

Kazaa Lite XP SP1 Fix
There are reports popping up around the net on a possible problem with Windows XP Service Pack 1 disabling Kazaa Lite (and in some cases Kazaa as well). The problems seem to be localised and are not affecting all users, if you are hit by the problem you will not be able to start Kazaa. If this is you then try this fix:
Step 1.Right click on the program file (the executable), then select the Compatibility tab.
Step 2.Check the box labeled "Run this program in Compatibility Mode for" and select Windows 98/ME from the dropdown menu.
Step 3.Then click "apply" and then ok.
The program should run fine.

DrvImagerXP 1.3 released
A new version (1.3) of DrvImagerXP (home.carolina.rr.com) has been released with no word on the changes. DrvImagerXP creates and restores drive images of FAT32 and NTFS partitions for the Windows 2000/XP operating systems. It makes backups of your partitions, but does not copy file-by-file, it doesn't know anything about files!. It creates a mirror image (but not reversed) of a partition by coping the sector bytes on the partition. You can create images of different operating system setups and swap them out in just minutes. You can read more about the program and see detailed instructions on how to use it here (home.carolina.rr.com).

Klez virus reappearance may be its death knell
ZDNet has reported that the Klez virus which delivered its latest payload on the sixth of September could in fact go along way towards "exterminating" the virus once and for all. Here's the bulk of the report:
A minor variant of the Klez virus is set to go into action tomorrow, erasing a host of files on infected hard drives. But the attack may also wipe out the attacker.

The 8-month-old mass-mailing computer virus called Klez.E triggers its payload on the sixth day of March, May, September and November, erasing 14 different types of files, including Word documents and HTML files.

But the variant has all but disappeared from the Internet, said Vincent Gullotto, director of the antivirus emergency response team at security company Network Associates, and the year's two remaining payloads should call attention to the few computers still infected with Klez.E, allowing the pest to be exterminated.

The Klez.E variant runs a distant second to its far more prevalent Klez.H cousin, making up only 3 percent of the junk email associated with the Klez virus. Klez.H accounts for the other 97 percent.

Data from email services provider MessageLabs shows that in August, the company intercepted 580,000 emails carrying the prolific Klez.H variant but only 16,000 carrying Klez.E. On Thursday, the minor Klez variant was present in only 338 infected emails in the last 24 hours.

Revolutionary Blank computer display that hides computer data
A Japanese electronics company called Iizuka Denki Kogyo has developed a computer screen that looks blank to anyone not wearing a pair of special polarising glasses. The modified LCD monitor could prove to be valuable for financial institutions that need to keep sensitive information safe from prying eyes. To anyone not wearing the glasses the screen appears to be white with no data on it at all. The displayed data is rendered invisible by doing away with a light-polarising screen from the front of the monitor. All LCD's use this filter to block some of the polarised light that passes through liquid crystals controlled by an electrical current. This makes it possible to display information by defining different parts of the screen in light and colour. In the IDK system, the polarising filter is effectively moved from the screen to the pair of glasses worn by authorised computer users. Read more at Newscientist (www.newscientist.com).

UT2003 to support Linux
Epic has posted their official word on whether UT2003 will be supported and run on a Linux box. Here's part of the forum thread on the word:
Linux is now up and running pretty well. I've been told that we should be able to release the Linux client and server executables around the same time as the windows version ships. Official tech support isn't provided for the Linux versions. Currently Linux will only work well with Nvidia cards - apparently ATI's OpenGL Linux and Mac drivers don't support texture compression. Hopefully this is something they will soon fix. Mac development is just underway so it will still be a little while before it's done.
The full thread is here (www.ina-community.com) if all you Linux users want revel a bit further.
