2002-09-09 08:43:00 | Hi Can someone please tell me what these mean ( I sort of know what some of these means so just to make sure...), it's from my manual of my motherboard(ms-5187). I think all of these will sound very stupid to you guys but please... :( 1) "Supports four memory banks using two 168-pin DIMM sockets" 2) "The mainboard supports a maximum memory size of 256MB)64-bit technology) or 512MB(128-bit technology for SDRAM...." ( my motherboard has 2 slots for the RAM so does this mean I can install a 256 SDRAM PC133 into one of the slots?) 3) "To operate properly, at least one 168-pin DIMM module must be installed" How do I know if the 128 or 256 SDRAM PC133 that I'm going to buy has 168pin or do all SDRAM has 168-pin DIMM? Thanks alot guys :) Jase Sen

The 256 Mb RAM will be double sided (two bank) but check when you buy > > 3) "To operate properly, at least one 168-pin DIMM > module must be installed" > How do I know if the 128 or 256 SDRAM PC133 that I'm > going to buy has 168pin or do all SDRAM has 168-pin > DIMM? If its not 168 pin, it aint going to fit therefore wouldnt work. All commonly available RAM will be 168 pin, notebook RAM is 144 pin I think. |

2002-09-09 10:14:00 | Where do you plan to buy? Prices vary quite a bit for the same thing amongst different retailers so shop around . When you've sorted out where you will buy from, make sure you give them the specs of your motherboard and the details that you've just given us to make sure you are getting the right one . If they advise you wrong then they will have to make amends . Check out http://www . pricespy . co . nz/ to find places that sell online and to get an idea of how much it costs . I'd also advise you to stick with name brand RAM with a good warranty . Post back here if you need further advice .

2002-09-09 10:20:00 | Sorry to be a bother but for No . 2 what if I brought a single sided 128 or 256 SDRAM, would it still work? This is cause I brought a single sided 128 SDRAM a while age, you know when the ram prices were so low, that with $10 you could probably a 128 PC133 SDRAM . So yeah, I brought a 128 SDRAM PC133 (single sided) at Dick Smith, the problem was after 2 weeks, I reinstall the RAM(cause I thought something was wrong with it), after that my motherboard could detect it anymore . It could still detect the other 64MB RAM in the other slot but not this one, I even switch the RAM, after that both slot couldn't detect the 128MB RAM only the 64MB RAM . Thanks alot for your help, if you could just answer the question above, it will be a big help :) thanks Jase Sen

2002-09-09 10:38:00 | Your Motherboard manual details exactly what sort of RAM you can use. Make sure you take it when you buy the RAM. It has good diagrams. It states that it will take from 8 Mb to 128 Mb per bank. You ask if you could use 256 Mb single sided RAM (1 bank) (1 bank per side, remember) No. Your manual says only 128 Mb per bank (side). This means a 256 stick must be double sided If your motherboard detected your 128 stick of RAM, then failed to do so when you re-installed, you may have damaged the RAM. Did you use an antistatic strap when installing it, from your wrist to the case? I would have thought Dick Smith RAM would have worked.
