78474 2002-09-11 08:48:00 Seriously now. A friend has a computer with W95 on it. I do not know the specs of it, but I am assuming it is fairly old & low powered. Would that be a fair coment?. Question is, Is it worth spending much money on, or should one put any upgrade money towards a new or newer m/c? Keeping the old one as a spare maybe. I see a W95 m/c,in human years, as being as old as me (first third of last century). Not as "active" as an XP m/c. Poppa John. :) Poppa John (284)
78475 2002-09-11 09:06:00 First things First, I don't know what an M/C is?
Next, What type of RAM does it have. If it's EDO, I know I've got 2 32MB Chips lying around, so you could easily pick up 4x 16MB Chips for maybe $50 all up!
HDD, See if you can pick up one or two "Few" gig HDD's coz the bios prolly won't support much more. That'd make it run nice, you could possibly even squeeze 98 On there, if the processor speed is 50Mhz Up, 98 will run nicely with 64MB Ram!

Check TradeMe.co.nz or www.trade-exchange.co.nz for some pricing on that stuff. They make great file hosts if you chuck a NIC in them.

Hope that's helped

78476 2002-09-11 09:08:00 First question would be is it an AT or ATX form factor? If an AT you could use it as a dedicated firewall running linux and buy a newer machine.

If it's an ATX then you could look at replacing the M/B etc and creating a bigger better faster machine (aka $6 million dollar .....)

Feeling adventurous?

78477 2002-09-11 10:01:00 hi

if your trying to upgrade to low P4 etc there is no way it would be worth working on it easyer to get new case and start from there. But if just up to say P2 or may be PIII it may be worth it. but be careful with your parts. ie as above the form factor ATX, MB and then look into ram too.....

78478 2002-09-11 10:07:00 Chilling Silence. m/c = machine.

Gorela. I honestly only know what I typed, nowt else.

Both. I do know that she is an O.A.P & would settle for something second hand reasonable. I suppose I should go & look at the ancient monster (thats the m/c not her). (I hope she never reads this, I could get Eunuched)
I suppose my original question sounded like "How long is a piece of string" on hindsight. Dopy Poppa John :8}

78479 2002-09-11 10:13:00 thelaw, Thanks Morse, but all that Tech stuff is way over my thinning grey hair. To me, P2, P3 & P4 is the number of times I get up in the night!!!!
Relieved Poppa John :D

78481 2002-09-11 10:30:00 Just thinking about the OAP depending on the size of the hard-drive there are some old M/B's that have both AT and ATX capability. Some time ago I picked up a Celeron 533 and M/B that I slotted into an old AT and used all the existing components. Graphics aren't fab, but it is much better than the Pentium 1 (rather than leak No 1!) that it had. Cost was close to $250, but with a bit of shopping around you could probably get similar cheaper.

If the OAP does read these posts, I have heard that the Vienna Boys are looking for a new soprano.

78482 2002-09-11 10:47:00 Gorela. Thanks. Will give you the point on that one.
Cannot do much fine physical work these days, the more I concentrate the more my hands shake.
Soprano, how did you know? I was a Boy Soprano till I got to 13 1/2 & swallowed a frog. Actually sang at the Albert Hall, twice, in London. Took a lot of living down at school. Now tone deaf Poppa John.

78483 2002-09-11 10:55:00 Whats wrong with an old computer?

Doubt whether she will be playing complex video games, downloading heaps of music off the net or running Photoshop etc etc. She probably only wants to keep in touch via email, MSN and look up the odd thing on the net.....

All it probably needs is a new Anti-Virus (install AVG) and bit of a tuneup and tweak and the HD defragmented.

Thats my two bobs worth anyway Poppa......
