2002-09-12 02:49:00 | I am a bit confused on the primary, secondary jackpoints, but I know that I have 2 jackpoints close together, where one is the original line and the other is the second line. I am testing both computers through the same jackpoint on the second line. I have the dialing properties set exactly the same for both computers/modems, and yes both are dialing out of NZ. I did an interesting test before. I managed to dial my cell phone number (our original land line number didn't work?) from the modem (that doesn't work) on the second line and my cell phone rang even though the modem was sounding a engaged tone. The modem engaged tone was also coming throught the cellphone. Does this help or hinder why I am having problems??? thanks again

If you take it there now and try a connect does it work . You are using Win XP was this upgraded to this or is it a new computer . Can you hear the modem actually dialing out and then getting the engaged tone or can you not hear it at all . Does it sound like the normal noises the modem makes apart from the handshaking sounds which you obviously will not get . Does the 676 error come up straight away or is there a delay . Is there anything else on this second line, phones, have you call minder . When you say you have 2 lines, these are two completely seperate lines coming into your house I take it . Is the other computer on Win XP as well . Do both computers have the same internal modems . Try deleting your dialup connection and going to Make new connection and set up a new one through the wizard . There seems to be something missing here as none of this is making any sense . |

2002-09-12 03:38:00 | Yes, it definitely works on the original line but not on the second line, I can confirm this . The modem does dial out and I can hear the modem making an engaged toneon the second line . When it works on the original line, it makes the engaged sound for 2 tones and then jumps into the annoying typical modem sound . 676 error is delayed by 10 seconds or so on the second line The original line has call waiting and the second line doesn't . Yep, there are 2 lines for sure . The other computer is Win98 and I'm on XP pro (not upgraded) . The other computer is a PC co . and so has a different modem to this one . The modem that is not working right is Genius (GM56PCI-L), which I have got the latest drivers (well I am pretty sure I have) . I just bought this modem the other day . "Try deleting your dialup connection and going to Make new connection and set up a new one through the wizard . " . . . I will try this now . thanks

2002-09-12 03:48:00 | Mike the modem is working fine on the original line. The only thing that is different is connecting from a new jack point on a new line. I would be inclined to concentrate in this area, the computer that is working on this new jackpoint may not be affected by any incorrect wiring at this new point.

2002-09-12 03:49:00 | I have tried setting up a new connection (dialup) and that didn't work either, so back to the drawing board . I am thinking of trying the modem out of the PC co . computer, but I am worried I might have no internet then if something goes wrong, so I guess my last option is to buy another modem (or maybe try and swap the Genius modem) . Unless there is any more ideas? ta .

2002-09-12 04:38:00 | Have you tried taking it to work or a friend/relatives house and testing it out there. If it works, that would at least narrow it down to it being the second line and some sort of wiring issue! | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2002-09-12 08:00:00 | Telephone/modem cords, thats the wire that plugs into the wall jack (BT box) come in two types. Telephone cords usually have 4 wires connected and modem cords have only 2 wires connected. You can see the difference by looking at the small plastic plug that fits the phone/modem. I have had problems using a 4 wire cord from a modem into a 2 wire domestic telephone system when it worked OK into a 3 wire domestic system. 2 wire domestic systems have replaced 3 wire Master/secondary systems in the last few years so your new line maybe a 2 wire while your old original line may still be 3 wire. Confusing eh? HTH PC

2002-09-12 11:25:00 | I have tried everything, the other computers modem dials up on the second line but the new modem doesn't, so it must be the modem. I will try and swap it tomorrow. Unless there are any last ditched ideas? | nzwalkabout (299) | |
