78484 2002-09-11 21:40:00 Baldy. Great minds think alike. That is exactly what I suggested, but......
We are dealing with a Woman here (I am sure I will suffer for that sentence!!) Long suffering Poppa John:)

78486 2002-09-12 01:05:00 Poppa, Women can be encouraged to change their minds sometimes... especially when offered chocolate.

I reckon you wanna stay with what you got. This biggest issue would be the modem speed. If its a winmodem you might get away with just upgrading the drivers. Otherwise rip it out and put an external one on.

And run Opera as the browser and email client.

78487 2002-09-12 06:40:00 IF it's a DX22-66 or better, it's still a useful machine.

Probably the best thing would be to increase the memory. That's the cheapest upgrade, and easiest. If you can keep away from IE6 ... and probably the later Netscape versions, the perfomance should be acceptable.

78488 2002-09-12 08:43:00 I can remember upgrading to IE 5 with my power house P166 with 64 meg and Win95 The poor wee thing curled up in the corner and whimpered. I still get the feeling that it has never forgiven me.

Looking at it from the perspective of an OAP I reckon that an operating system upgrade would be a good idea. Win98 or (dare I say it) ME at least so that it supports auto-updates. At least then you can be reasonably sure that the operating system isn't too full of holes.

Main hassle with ME is the need for at least a 166Mhz machine.
