78546 2002-09-11 09:19:00 I am having a bit of trouble with my new modem in the last day or so. Our house has 2 lines and I have 1 computer hooked up and working with no problems on the second line and I have another computer hooked up on the same line with problems....

I keep getting an engaged signal even when it is not engaged through a phone (I also have tested the ISP dial up number through the phone, with no problems too). The modem does work through the 1st line but I really want it to work on the second (like the other computer does).

any ideas?

thanks

78547 2002-09-11 10:05:00 does it work with the other pc modem unpluged? tweak'e (174)
78548 2002-09-11 10:22:00 Believe it or not, updating your drivers may make a difference, especially if you are using winmodems. SoniKalien (792)
78549 2002-09-11 11:14:00 Yep, I have tried the modem connected directly to the line with the other computers modem unplugged.

And, I am also using the latest drivers.

Any other ideas? Thanks

78550 2002-09-11 13:02:00 This is a really strange situation, are you quite sure it works on the original line .
Did you have to add any number to your ISP connection number to connect from the original which may not now be required .
When you say you are getting an engaged signal do you mean you are getting an error number 676 line busy error .
This is usually due to the phone number being incorrect or you have use area code dialing properties ticked in your dialup connection .
.
What Windows system are you using, sometimes pulse dialing selected instead of tone can cause a line busy error .

78551 2002-09-11 23:59:00 Yep it is working fine on the original line, but yes I am very confused why it won't work on the second line.

I am using the exact same dial-up for both lines, (same number with no area code ticked in the dial-up, because I am using the 0867 number).

But yes I do get the 676 error: The phone line is busy, even though its not!

I am running XP. Help please.

78552 2002-09-12 01:25:00 Is it possible there is some variation in the way the jackpoint for the new line is wired up and is not compatible with the phone cable on the computer that is giving trouble yet might be OK on the original jackpoint.

If each computer has their own cable from the modem port on the computer to the jack point try using the cable from the computer that works on the one that is giving trouble making sure you connect it to the port marked line not phone.
Some of these phone cables look the same but can be wired up differently internally.

Clutching at straws here but there does not seem to be any other logical explanation.

78553 2002-09-12 02:17:00 Thanks for the help but I am getting frustrated now .

I tried using the different connecting lines which all work into the original phone line but the modem still gives the busy signal for the second phone line, and yet the other computers modem dials without any problems . I guess I am running out of options, but are there any more ideas? Will buying another modem help? thanks again .

78554 2002-09-12 02:27:00 Have you tried using the modem out of the first computer in the second one?

Also have you checked that all your dial-up settings are correct - does the computer know you're in NZ and not another country?

Mike.

78555 2002-09-12 02:35:00 Do you have two jackpoints for the second line?

If so, one (primary) will be wired directly to the grey pillar outside. The second - and any others - (secondary) will be wired to the primary.

The pc that dials with no problems will be connected to the primary jackpoint. The pc giving problems will be connected to a secondary jackpoint, but the phone will work from this jackpoint (dial-tone, etc).

You need to check the wiring from the primary to the secondary jackpoint. It's likely that it's wired incorrectly (it doesn't have to be bang-on for the phone to work, but it does for a modem connection).
