| 78866 | 2002-09-12 09:59:00 | Damn, I just got my first bit of spam into my Hotmail account, have had this account for a year now so I guess that wasn't bad going, anyway I bring in the mail through OE but all it will let me do is put it in the deleted folder but not delete from the system as it says it doesn't support manual deletion. How can I get around this? Thanks Pauline. |

Go to "Tools" Then "Message Rules" and click on "Mail" From here you can set up rules that will enable OE to delete specific addresses (ie @yahoo.com would delete ALL incoming messages from that provider) or if the header contains capitals or whatever you decide. |

| 78871 | 2002-09-12 12:07:00 | Hi Pauline, Your best bet is to turn on Hotmail's 'Junk Mail filter'. Log on to Hotmail, then click 'Options' at the top of the page and under Mail Handling click on Junk Mail Filter. We did this some time ago when we were getting quite a bit of spam. We get about 5-10 spam mails a day and almost all of them are put correctly into this folder by Hotmail. They automatically delete them after 7 days (or you can choose to delete them sooner if you wish). You can check on the contents of this folder just like the Inbox, to be sure no genuine mails have gone there (I've only had a couple go in there in about a year, so it's pretty safe). It's best to tell Hotmail what email addresses are valid so those emails definitely won't go into the junk mail folder, although they seem to be able to distinguish genuine emails from the spam pretty well. As I'm writing this I see I have 40 junk mails in that folder but I've seen it get up to 60+. Spam mail is a real problem that seems to get worse as time goes on. |
