78841 2002-09-12 07:07:00 Im one of the small % of NZers with ADSL who have ongoing problems loading online bank pages...On the Banks advice Ive used "Dr TCP" to try and overcome black hole router issues...didnt work...anyone have any ideas? Blako (1861)
78842 2002-09-12 10:28:00 Just wondering if you are certain that it's the ADSL causing the problems? It could be something else like an ad-blocker or firewall program. That prevented me from doing online banking until I set it up properly. The javascript pages wouldn't open. Susan B (19)

I was having the same problem until today when I
downloaded SP1 for IE and now all is Hunky-Dory!

Wasn't a problem with Mozilla though?
and I thought javascript was enabled everywhere
on all apps?

It's not your fault -- it's the banks blocking all Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) traffic. ICMP messages are used to tell the sending host the MTU (maximum transmission unit) for each packet that routers will accept.

So, what's happening here is that the banks use an MTU of less than the standard 1500 bytes, but their networks don't tell the sending hosts this, so they don't know to fragment the packets. The result is no or partial loading of Web pages, slow connections, etc.

You shouldn't have to change your settings, and thus get degraded network performance, just to work around the banks' broken networks.

Blocking all ICMP is the result of misguided attempts at increasing security; it's not necessary to break the Internet like this. The banks claim that they haven't received any complaints about the issue, so I would suggest that you do just that.

thanks for this...i did know this was the problem and Ive complained bitterly to no avail..they give me 'solutions' that dont work and Im at the stage Im going to move banks...is there anything I can do that might help?

Since it's a problem beyond your control (ie. at the banks' end), there's no quick workaround. The banks are asking you to disable path MTU discovery and/or adjust the MTU to suboptimal levels, both of which will degrade network performance at your end.

Making the changes aren't trivial either, and nobody should need to fiddle with their TCP/IP stack settings just to view a Web site. If the bank in question doesn't understand this, then you should take a dim view of their Internet venture, and assume that if they can't get a basic thing like network connectivity right, the rest might be broken as well.

I would. Read about Path MTU Discovery and why it's a Good Thing, and you'll see why.
