78722 2002-09-12 02:13:00 Yes - normally towards to end of the installation. Ask all you like - plenty of advice given out here - some needed to taken with a grain of salt !! Peter H (220)

That's actually dependant on what version of Windows you're actually installing - Win 98 asked near the end, while 95 and ME asked nearer the beginning.

Oh, and Freeinternet - we all happily answer anybody's questions (if we know the answer), no matter how new they are to the forum.

78724 2002-09-12 02:34:00 Welcome. Yes you will need the CDkey for installing. If you have an upgrade CD and you are installing on a system with no OS you may be asked for the CD or diskette of a previous version of Windows as well.

If you have problems installing post a question here. Theres plenty of people with very good knowledge and you will normally get a quick response.

cheers

78729 2002-09-12 07:18:00 I think there is a rumour that there are some copies floating around which might be loaded without a key. They are totally illegal. With the amount of system information which can "leak" when a computer is attached to the Internet, anyone using such a "stolen" OS is likely to be caught. That could be expensive.

A legal copy of any Microsoft OS will require a key for the installation to work. (Some of the earlier ones would accept "any" number with the correct number of digits ... ]:) It's a bit more rugged now.

A copy of Linux does not need a key. It is open.

I don't think anyone was trying to treat you as a child ... but perhaps they were trying too hard to encourage a new user, after the doubt you expressed in your first posting. :D

>i no this guy that said when he installed xp, he didnt need the key??

Yes i think he's telling porkys, unless there is a corperate version of XP that is like the win2000 version that doesn't worry about keys
