| 78687 | 2002-09-12 01:36:00 | What is the most efficient way to set up Win XP Home with 2 (or more) users who each have the capability to download and install whatever software they want without it EVER affecting the other user(s) ? That is when, an install is done there is no desktop icon on the others desktops and no entry in the Start/Programs. Additionally (and not optionally) how can some *programs* (not just the data) be available to just the user that installed the software ? For eg. I have a friend who wants to have ICQ and a genealogy program called Legacy plus all data files, only accessable by her, as her grandson has no interest in ICQ (and gets annoyed that the personalisation aspects for multiple users when installing ICQ into Program Files dir and the constant popping up of ICQ "on his side of the fence" comes up during normal running.) She doesn't want him to have access to either the program or the data for Legacy. Conversely she doesn't want to have any of his games popping up on "her side of the fence". How can I separate the 2 on the same machine. (and using the standard XP approach of a common program install and personalise each users settings is not appropriate for basically 2 *separate* users.) There is the need of course to have some of the s/w installed accessable by both but I'd like to explain a process to them that caters for programs both will use and programs and/or data that just one or other will use. I am aware of setting the Privacy feature under the My Documents structure for data/documents but not the most suitable directory structure for where to install user specific *programs*. Any help appreciated ? |
