78732 2002-09-12 07:41:00 yeah Grahams got the answer..

If your about to set a computer from scratch, you may as well have a stable operating system!

i kinda get the feeling that your copy of XP might not be entirely bought and paid for, so you need an operating system at the right price.

Redhat is commonly available, and usually "costs" a $10 donation per disk as appriciation for the time spent, downloading, burning, and packaging the disk for you.

78734 2002-09-12 07:48:00 There is/was a corperate version of 2000 floating around that didn't need that, basicly large orgs like govt depts and councill sometimes get these with a licence to use over a few hundred machines, The discs didn't need serials, and sometimes 1 or 2 of the disks fell sideways.... once again not at all legal, but it happened

Chances of finding such a thing is small, i have only once ever met anyone with one. Everytime i have installed 2000, it has been with "legit" software.

You get what you pay for, and it would appear you got burnt.

78736 2002-09-12 08:00:00 Redhat is a flavour of linux
Depends on what you want the machine for, but a linux machine would reliably surf the net, pick up your email, send your email, give you an office suite, (usually star office), and give you numerous other progs, like the gimp, which alot of the webs buttons are made from.

The Linux verses windows arguement, gets like the ford Vs holden argument, they're both cars, and on the surface, theres not that much difference to driving one round the block.

Most of the machines that make the internet work, including the machine hosting this forum run on linux for the simple reasons that linux is far more customisable, and is truly stable
