1313125 2012-11-18 04:24:00 Hi All..Major calamity.

Toshiba L500D.W7. Just 3years old.

On startup the m/c gets as far as the Microsoft Logo then emits a continuous high pitched squeal. Screen says...Initialization failed...whilst screaming. There is also an "electrical burning smell" comng from the fan vent.

What could be the problem? Thanks PJ

1313126 2012-11-18 04:31:00 A dead component? stratex5 (16685)
1313127 2012-11-18 05:42:00 Sounds like something has failed.

The squeal will more than likely the Alarm of the failure. Its possible the cooling fan has failed or failing and its overheating. Best to get it to someone who knows what they are doing as continues usage or attempts at fixing may result in more damage.

3 Years old -- Seen many laptops not even last that long before parts failure.

1313128 2012-11-18 05:50:00 could even be the squeeling is te fan bearings are shot, which could also be the cause of the burning smell. I would take Wainuitechs advice and turn it off until you can get it looked at gary67 (56)

Thanks for the reply . It has had careful treatment, home use only . Will be taking it in somewhere . A pity you are not closer to Wanganui!!! At best it is worth repairng, at worst we can get the HD out of it & use that . It was backed up earlier this year but has had some heavy use lately . Haden't got that backed up . Damn .

Was hoping for longer than 3 years tho . I doubt that we will be able to buy another . PJ .

1313130 2012-11-21 01:11:00 This is a known issue with older Toshiba laptops. There are 4 capacitors mounted close to the CPU so they over heat and eventually explode. If you replace them they will work for another year or so before they die again. The capacitors themselves are cheap <$10, but the labour cost to replace them is horrendous.
The capacitors model is NEC/TOKIN 0E128 and it is a Toshiba design fault

1313131 2012-11-21 02:09:00 I would say CGA should apply on a laptop only 3 years old. DeSade (984)
1313132 2012-11-21 06:55:00 All sorted. Took it into a Techiewho found that the microphone had somehow got turned on & the squeeal was feedback. So all good again.
However he did open it up & clean out 3 years worth of "Dust & Dirt. Big sighs of relief.

Thanks for the support people. PJ
