1313135 2012-11-21 08:02:00 Are you still getting the "Initialization failed" error? Wonder how its related to the mic. Profix (16949)
1313136 2012-11-21 08:57:00 Are you still getting the "Initialization failed" error? Wonder how its related to the mic.+1 Was thinking the same thing, unless its the mic software related.

One other thing that doesn't quite sound right -- Laptops have built in Mic's, they are designed to work without "feedback" through their speakers, other wise anytime someone used video chat/messaging you would have problems.

1313137 2012-11-21 09:10:00 Me too, I don't understand how the mic is related to those problems.

But, the bottom line is, it's been fixed.

Worth fixing, good for the OP and good for the planet!

1313139 2012-11-21 21:10:00 Laptop is working well. No smell from anywhere. Initialization message gone. We will see...won't we? PJ Poppa John (284)
1313140 2012-11-21 21:19:00 Its good there was nothing major, Dust and dirt can cause a smell when its heated.

As it was written "emits a continuous high pitched squeal" can mean several things. Its hard to determine exactly what it is without actually hearing it.
There is a huge difference between a feed back squeal and a failed part / Warning squeal.

Better to be safe though and got someone to have a look at it than carry on and give advise on only a guess.

Just curious -- Does the mic still work ?

1313142 2012-11-21 22:30:00 One other thing that doesn't quite sound right -- Laptops have built in Mic's, they are designed to work without "feedback" through their speakers, other wise anytime someone used video chat/messaging you would have problems. It's a mixer thing - normally the mic is unmuted in the recording mixer, but muted in the playback mixer. This means software can use it to record, but you won't hear what the mic picks up out of the speakers.

If you unmute the mic in the playback mixer, whatever the mic picks up gets piped straight to the speakers - hence the feedback, which is essentially looping whatever the mic picks up. Generally you want to avoid doing this unless you're wearing headphones (headphones break the feedback loop, because the mic can't hear them).
