| 1288422 | 2012-07-14 09:05:00 | I had Garmin XT on my old Samsung, and I think it to be far superior to Nokia Drive on my Nokia 800. :)Did garmin n come with the Samsung? If you are talking about ones you have put on the phone them I agree. Have used the tomtom app on the iPhone with the cradle. But still I think Nokia drive is the best I have used that has come per installed on a phone? Oh did I mention free maps, go to oz, free maps, go too uk, free maps And if you really need a gps to find the nearest road to start your trip, maybe you shouldnt be on the at all |

And adding to its value was Garmin POI Loader - and the NZ Open GPS site. And if you really need a gps to find the nearest road to start your trip, maybe you shouldnt be on the at all Oh, I am so (almost) mortally wounded by this comment. You are talking about someone who has navigated miles and miles with only the stars to guide me (not a Kupe thing, you understand, but with a sextant and all that) :) I was really only testing the capabilities and accuracies of the GPS ... Don't even bother looking for the "Yeah, right" icon - there isn't one! :D |

| 1288424 | 2012-07-14 09:50:00 | I'm interested in this thread as I'm considering a car GPS when I move to Christchurch. Depending on what I end up doing for a job I could be doing a lot of driving around | gary67 (56) | ||

So yes nokia drive was very adequate considering my alternative(paper map and wife) |

| 1288426 | 2012-07-14 11:30:00 | We have a 3 year old navman GPS. The maps are outdated so I just use sygic on android. Works very well compared to the old navman. | sahilcc7 (15483) | ||
| 1288427 | 2012-07-14 12:32:00 | I'm interested in this thread as I'm considering a car GPS when I move to Christchurch. Depending on what I end up doing for a job I could be doing a lot of driving around I know I said, assuming 3G was just paid for. I haven't used enough of 3G to comment. But .. when I was using Symbian Anna, me or my passenger could not just set a route as the car was already moving. It could never get a position in the 5-10 minutes, it was held next to the window. Whereas my 2yr old Navman S150 could do that. As I am pulling out of the ski field, I set it to go "home" and it would manage that in the next 30 seconds. Also if no data is being used, if you are beside a hill it can throw the position off some 100 odd meters. IME also, if you stood there to get a position fix and then drive, the phone could be placed next to the auto stick gear. As I don't yet have a cradle. I cannot stand the computer speech on the Androids. And I guess maybe you have to buy the app? B/c without 3G while you can cache numerous 60MB sizes, you still don't get routing (voice turn/turn assist) or POI searches like hotels, restaurants, petrol stations. I just haven't bought apps b/c I travel for fun and each time I try to go do diff places. So even if I got a Android they are nice phones, when I travel I may need to use my Nokia. Anyone know how to get better Google Map voice guidance?? With my Navman, in Queenstown it asked us to do this big loop so I guess there are some quirks but I've been happy with my Nokia. When I travel the guidebook tells you what to see and do and eat right. Most of that has been on the phone. Meaning Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Bangkok. It's really handy to know where the bus/train stations are and they now have public transport app as well. Where the hotels, restaurants, visitor's centres and attractions are as you step off the plane. Compared to my Navman, startup is an issue but I haven't used enough 3G to say how good that is. Everything else is pretty adequate, good voice clarity, not sure if it counts down to when you make that turn. My Navman does. Also my Navman is not new enough to get parking availability, traffic updates or lane guidance. I guess that GPS branded equipment the maps do go out of date, my Navman, Wellington SH2 around the Hutt with the developments and that Shell station that was gone in Kaikoura and due to the cost it might be better to buy a new unit :lol: |

| 1288428 | 2012-07-14 12:49:00 | When it comes to cellphone GPS, you don't have to rely solely on Google Navigation. There are plenty of other options such as CoPilot, Sygic and iGo. | Renmoo (66) | ||

My personal favourite at the moment. Biggest advantage is its offline GPS feature = saves a lot of money on data usage. |

| 1288430 | 2012-07-14 12:57:00 | Yeah the costs adds up though, the last trip I did in 10 days I went to 3 countries. They are pretty good, but TomTom actually has less countries than Sygic and they both have less than Nokia or Google. Ie., Japan, Phillipines, Vietnam etc. Renmoo - how the voice assist on Sygic? Do they sound like a robot or do they sound more like a TomTom/Navaman? |
