2002-09-12 21:28:00 | Have run scandisk thorough before after closing all programs and screensaver without problems and over the last few nights have tried the same at bed time, but in safemode as per advise on this forum. But in the morning I discover that it has restarted 10 times and got no further due to the warning box. Ctrl alt del says only explorer is running so what is writing to my HD? Is it because my user/identity savings are not used by the default options in safemode? Do I need to change my screensaver options in safemode perhaps? Anything else that could be writing to my HD? | Danger (287) | |
2002-09-12 22:06:00 | What version of windows? It is possible that you have other stuff running but it wont show up in Ctrl+Alt+Del I have some keyloggin software that I use from time to tie when I'm writing my reports so that If the PC dies, it's constantly saving. You might have spyware als?! Chilling_Silence

2002-09-12 23:02:00 | Hi... Prior to scanning I run a program called ENDITALL version 2.0.0.0 (it's free) which quickly & selectively shuts downs and/or safely kills background programs except for systray, explorer and itself. I run the program after viewing the background running programs list. I have seen on the program list, some programs which are not visible in the ctl-alt-del box (Ads maybe?). Note: - If trying this program...really read & understand the help notes - it can be a bit nerving (probably the scull & crossbones)... Cheers

2002-09-12 23:13:00 | Yes I have read and reread Faq 5, thats where I learnt to run Scandisk in safe mode. I went back to safe mode and ran adaware and found "Alexis", seemed to indicate it was a microsoft browser extension. I backed it up, and also saved the log indicating the seven runing processes, and removed "Alexis". Rebooted into my default user, which is my user login, not the original default as this has been locked so it can't be accessed. I did this through Windows Regestry Guide to prevent people without a password accessing my PC. I then had no record in My documents of the log I saved, or in Adaware so I could post it here, so I attempted to go back to Safe Mode but it wouldn't resart in Safe Mode. I ran Sys Restore but I still can no longer run pc in Safe Mode. Whats going on? Is there another way I can enter Safe Mode or restore something so my Pc will start in Safe Mode? Windows ME.

2002-09-12 23:17:00 | Thanks KC. Do you then run Scandisk in Safe Mode or not? It seems I have opened a can of worms by attempting this in safe mode when I have never had problems in the past. Another thing, what prevents another user accessing my pc via safe mode and bypassing loggin passwords? This appears to be a security flaw.

2002-09-12 23:52:00 | If you have Find Fast on your computer it may be the culprit preventing scandisk from running . Have a look in Start>Programs>StartUp and if it is in there right-click on it and choose Delete . Can't help with the other problems though, sorry, but hope that Mike sees this and might know .

2002-09-13 00:02:00 | Thanks Susan, I have checked Find Fast already, it starts to install when I click on it so I assume it is not loaded or causing problems. A little loathe to delete it until I have explored its functions to find out what it does. Will probably run it sometime and then uninstall it (I like to at least know what I am missing):) | Danger (287) | |
2002-09-13 03:41:00 | Ok, I ran Scandisk thorough and Defrag from my user/loggin (not from safe mode) and then was able to go back and open safe mode in the usuall way. Scandisk took about two and a half hours and drefrag took about 10 mins. So my problems seem to be non-existant now. What advantage is there to me in running these programs in safe mode? Whats to stop someone accessing my pc through safe mode? Thanks for all your help.

2002-09-13 03:51:00 | Safe mode = Minimal Drivers! Usually there is no CD-Rom (In My Experience), Networking is usually disabled and theres a few other things, like display drivers too I think. I use WinTasks to check, there's been a trial version on a Cover Disc about 2 months ago. Check google for the URl, but that'll let you see what's running or not for in the future, and do a few other nifty things if youve got a few moments spare! What's to stop somebody accessing your PC through Safe Mode? Dunno, I'd ask Susan B, Tweak'e or Godfather. I've used BIOS security before and that does great. There's little need for a windows password if they can't get past the memory check at boot, or into the bios to change the password either!!!! (That really pi$$e$ off some of the family :p ;)) Hope that helps Chilling_Silence
