79071 2002-09-13 05:54:00 Can I please desuperpollicate ( . mn . rr . com/wwftd/def . htm#desuperpollicate" target="_blank">home . mn . rr . com) September 11th hype? I don't mean to outrage people with my cold and unfeeling thoughts on born and bred Kiwi's false "American Patriotism", but isn't it time the international community got over it?

Yes, terrible thing . Yes, very bad . Yes, George W Bush is a complete idiot .

"The attack on our nation was also an attack on the ideals that make us a nation . Our deepest national conviction is that every life is precious, because every life is the gift of a creator who intended us to live in liberty and equality .

More than anything else, this separates us from the enemy we fight . We value every life . Our enemies value none, not even the innocent, not even their own . And we seek the freedom and opportunity that give meaning and value to life . "

(and then lets go and kill innocent Afghani women and children)

79072 2002-09-13 06:15:00 Bit rough in Prague, eh? They weren't even speaking English back then, certainly not there. So how come the English came up with a word for it?

Was it to do with emptying chamberpots into the street?

79073 2002-09-13 06:19:00 Honeylaser... Now you've gorn & done it. That Big White Dome (ear) thingy down in the top of the SI has Gotcha. It will have plucked your comment about whatsisname out of the ether & logged it. Wasn't it your fella that was going to work o/seas for a while? (Earlier Post?) If so I hope it wasn't That country. He will surely get the Desuperpollicate, Maybe even Defenestrated!! Not Serious Poppa John (am I ever?) :D Poppa John (284)
79074 2002-09-13 06:19:00 The word is actually from the French "fenestre" = "window" (I know I left the accents off). It might have come from Latin, which they would have used, especially the Hussites, because they were religious rebels. Graham L (2)
79075 2002-09-13 06:22:00 Desuperpollicate has a grand history anyway, derived from pollicate, which is a descriptor of the downward shaped spurs on insects legs. godfather (25)
79076 2002-09-13 06:32:00 Ahh, Graham, have to pull you up on the French spelling of 'window'... it's 'fenêtre'...

...knew I'd use my schoolgirl French one day! :D

Unless, of course, your version is old French... in that case, I yield to your vast wisdom and knowledge!

Cheers

79077 2002-09-13 06:42:00 Well done Kerry. I had it right first .. then I thought and looked again, and compared it with the derived word.. And made it wrong. But I did French in the 4th form (we had Tintin books to learn colloquial French) and that was a year or two ago. I had an idea that it had the circumflex but can't include it without a lot of work. Graham L (2)
79078 2002-09-13 07:00:00 hehe, my schoolgirl french days were 17 years ago now, OUCH!

I had to check Google, just to make sure I was right and they had an e with the circumflex above it, so just copy and pasted that into the post... SO cheated!!

Don't you just want to defenstrate me? :D

Being a girl an' all, I got the 'Madeleine' (sp?) experience... that and singing Frère Jacqué

Found this for future reference though... need to see if it works though:

Accent Representation

The default keyboard representation of accented characters in X-Mosaic, running under the UNIX operating system, is made up of two character strings with the vowel followed by the appropriate symbol. These are:

grave = back slash. Example: à --> a\
aigu = forward slash. Example: é --> e/
circonflexe = caret. Example: ê --> e^
cedille = comma. Example ç --> c,
trema = double quote. Example ö --> o"

where the hell do you find the 'caret' on the keyboard... am I blind, or is it a special character (probably on the character map?)?
Kerry Dodds (1477)
79079 2002-09-13 07:10:00 The caret is normally at the front end of the donkey. (On your keyboard, you might find it with shift/6)... Graham L (2)
