79465 2002-09-16 11:43:00 Those links would be great. Yeah, shes a tough one, I still haven't been able to figure it out either, thanks anyway. nzwalkabout (299)
79466 2002-09-17 04:25:00 Can anyone else help me get 'My Documents' back under 'My Computer' in XP pro? nzwalkabout (299)
79467 2002-09-17 05:31:00 OK, by viewing the code of one of the plugins for X-teq Setup, I was able to glean the following info:

You can add the Dial-up Networking, Scheduled Tasks, and Web Folders icons to my computer. To do this, you open regedit, (backup of course!!) and navigate to...

"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\exp lorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\"

The following three keys turn on those folders:

DUN = "{992CFFA0-F557-101A-88EC-00DD010CCC48}"
SCHEDULED TAKS ="{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}"
WEB="{BDEADF00-C265-11d0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}"

Inside eack key is a value called Default, which contains a string which is the name of the folder.

e.g. Default "Web Folders"

The keys above are just the CLSID for each of those sets of folders, so my guess is that you could create a new key with the class ID for My documents, and viola! I am going to go and try it, and will let you know the results.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.

79468 2002-09-17 05:57:00 OK, I couldn't find the CLSID for My Documents, but I was able to get it to work for the desktop. IE I put the desktop icon inside My computer using the CLSID for desktop.

Maybe you could do some research on this front. I do wonder if it is possible, as I have never owned a PC with my documents inside my computer!

79469 2002-09-18 11:23:00 Thanks Graham,

I tried a few things you suggested but I still couldn't get My Documents to appear. I searched around the web and couldn't find much, a few closely related topics but nothing that helped.

79470 2002-09-18 11:51:00 Oops, apologies nzwalkabout, i will post those links for you:

With the shared docs one(link) - you or somebody may be able to work out some modifications to the registry edit, as it would probably be quite easy looking at that, showing how to get the "shared docs" back when they go missing from there. I bet Graham would know what to change!

Shared Docs Missing From my computer(I think this may be the most use)
support.microsoft.com

Changing default location of my docs or restoring default location
support.microsoft.com

The my computer icon displays the my docs folder of another user
support.microsoft.com

Goodluck - hope you may get something of value from somewhere in them :-)

Gosh I am a bit worried now, we are talking about the same thing here aren't we? I use XP home version & if i click on My Computer, there is a list that says "Files stored on this computer" and under that is My Docs, Shared Docs and other users Docs folders. I personally don't use that way to go to my docs as i find it easier through the start menu.
But i thought you (Graham) were using xp too, must be wrong or our systems are set up differently. I hope we are talking about the same thing Nzwalkabout!!?:|

79472 2002-09-18 12:04:00 Thanks mate, I will have a good look. It will be good to hear what Graham thinks too. Thanks again. nzwalkabout (299)
79473 2002-09-18 12:21:00 Yep, we are talking about the same thing J Zep, my computer is setup like yours (although missing My Documents now!). I guess have gotten used to My Documents under My Computer in Explorer that I miss it. nzwalkabout (299)
79474 2002-09-19 05:12:00 OK, I had turned this feature off in my XP Pro system, so long ago I forgot about it.

I have a question? Is the entire "Files Stored on This Computer" section missing from My Computer, or just My Documents??

If the entire section is missing, here is the fix:

1. Backup the registry.

2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\DelegateF olders\

3. Select the key, and right click in the right hand pane and select new>Key.

Name the new key {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}

4. Inside the key, right click on "default" and select modify. In the modify window, just click OK to confirm the value is blank.

Your problem should now be fixed.

You can easily fix it using tweakui which is a free download, or on the PC World cover disc.
