The economics are such that you need high population density for these things. The installation of fibre in Christchurch seems to have stopped ... That duplication of the infrastructure would have cost about $2000 per house if it had been finished ... so that's a lot of money to be covered by charges to those who change to it. (If 10% change, that's $20000, just for the presence of the fibre + the cost of the connection). PLC need the cable to be there, and then is virtually a triplication of the infrastructure It's never going to be free. Bandwidth is expensive. |
