| 79770 | 2002-09-15 10:47:00 | I need some assistance figuring out whether my friend's hard drive or computer has a problem. he advised me that when his computer starts an error message is received saying that his hard drive will fail. By pushing f1 computer starts no problem. Could someone advise if the hard drive has a fault or whats causing the error message. I don't have any other information on the problem apart from what i have listed |

| 79774 | 2002-09-15 11:17:00 | oh sorry. i don't know heaps about it, but "smart" is supposed to detect HD errors before they occur and warn you (i think). I was just wondering if what you described was exactly this... it's only on newer machines and i've never actually seen it in motion. i'm not sure of what type of error it detects though, nor how reliable it is. you can enable/disable it in the bios settings... |

| 79778 | 2002-09-15 12:01:00 | I had that happen to me before as well. it means that your hard drive has damaged or corrupted clusters. you can temporarily fix this by using scandisk and choosing automatically fix errors. but one a hard drive starts to get corrupted clusters, the amount of corrupted clusters will continually increase. i eventually had to get a new hard drive. | Chao is back (634) | ||
