79580 2002-09-15 04:11:00 I am helping a friend with his PC and would like some help with the below.

The OP system is XP preinstalled and is a new PC about two months ago.
1. Problems:
The PC boots up okay and sets up the desktop and Icons within about 30 – 45 Secs.
Once the desktop is setup there is about 1.5 minutes delay before any of the functions or applications become available, e.g. if the dial up connection is selected there is a delay in opening until the delay has finished. Once the time delay has done its course, the selected function or application, in this case the dial up, becomes active and the connection made as per the norm.

While in this delay period the HD is periodically seeking something and if the tool showing the CPU usage is open, it shows 100% until the delay of 1.5 minutes has run its course. The “A” floppy does a quick operation and then CPU usage drops to almost 0% or very low.
At the end of the delay, all application can be opened instantly as per normal operation.
What could be causing the delay?

2. After selecting to shut down the PC an error displays saying that:
Windows virtual memory minimum too low. Low on virtual memory windows is increasing the size of virtual memory. See Help.
Once OK clicked the PC does its shutdown and powers off and all is well until next time.

Your suggestions and help would be appreciated.

1. Is the computer connected to a network? If not, and the computer has a network card, you will probably be able to get rid of this delay by disabling the network card. Follow this process to do so (there might be an easier way, but this is how I did it):

Right click on "My Computer" from the desktop. Click on "Manage", and wait for the app to open. You may want to maximise the Computer Management window. Click on "Device Manager" from the list on the left, then in the list on the right click the + next to "Network Adapters" and double-click on the name of the network adapter that's installed. In the Properties window that opens, under "Device usage" (right at the bottom) select "Do not use this device (disable)", and click OK, then close the Computer Management window. You might need to restart the PC, I'm not sure. Then if you restart the delay should be gone. If not, then I guess it's a problem other than the network card, but this is what I narrowed it down to be.

2. Is the system running a program called Norton's Personal Firewall, or Norton Internet Security? If so, then you'll need to go to the www.symantec.com website[/url] and download a program called "LRSETUP.EXE" and install that, and that should remove the virtual memory message on shutdown.

79582 2002-09-15 09:06:00 RE. Problem 2, here's the link direct to the program you should install: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/updates/lrsetup.exe

and the info page that tells about the problem is found here:

service2.symantec.com

(You may need to remove spaces from the URL to make them work properly).
