79568 2002-09-15 03:53:00 Hey there everyone, it's been a while since i was here last :)

I'm wanting suggestions on which Linux I should go for.
I'm pretty much a newbie, but don't wanna be hidden from it all - I wanna learn.
I want it as my desktop OS.

So, that distro's I know are:
Redhat - I don't think this is for me
Mandrake 8.2 - is it too easy?
Suse 8.0 - looks possible
Slackware 8.1 - also looks possible

What're your opinions? One of the above, or another?

Thanks a lot,
Jonathan Giles

79569 2002-09-15 04:35:00 What puts you off Red Hat? The Mandrake distribution is based on it. I guess that Red Hat and Mandrake are the two most used in NZ. (Possibly in the world). I think that Red Hat is the most popular as a www server.

They are all GNU/Linux. Debian is more for those who like playing with OSs. But any of those you list would be fine. Probably. ;-)

79570 2002-09-15 05:08:00 lol, ok.
Reasons for disliking Redhat: none really, other than when I first used it as my first Linux OS, RH5.0 scared me away.

And since then I have used 6.0 (I think) and Mandrake 8.2 - RH just seems scarier and more networky - I want a desktop OS.

Plus I enjoy supporting the underdog - RH just seems to near to Microsoft for my liking - very money oriented (in my opinion). Which is why I'm interesting in debian, suse and slackware - but I know nothing about them.

Mandrake is good, but it uses irregular filesystems, etc so I'm not too keen.

Thanks a lot,
Jonathan Giles

79571 2002-09-15 06:06:00 I'm running suse 8.0

Installing suse was much easier than flashing the bios, so my 80 gig HDD could be used.

Once i get my head around each thing i want to do, it very suddenly becomes very simple and logical. I've been extreemly short of time since installing it, but have managed to get most things i want going.

Suse is EXTREEMLY stable. The only downtime i have had so far, running 24/7 is when i moved the brain of the machine to under the bench, and was forced to shutdown before i removed the power lead.

Suse is a 7 CD set, and the 7 CDs provide just about everything that you would expect, including star office etc.

BTW, apart from a redhat box 2+years ago, that i had running for a week or so, this has been my entire experaince with LINUX as a direct user. The suse box will never be running 'doze again.

The only thing i'll say against it, is that i can't find a copy to download anywhere!

79572 2002-09-15 06:18:00 Thanks - I think i'm leaning towards Suse 8.0 at the moment as well...

Where did you get it?

Would it be possible to get a copy somehow?

Thanks a lot,
Jonathan Giles

79573 2002-09-15 06:31:00 Mine was copied of a CD set that came in from europe somewhere. Twas a freind of a freind.......

7 CD's, but no DVD, the DVD stayed in europe. The CDs were "surplus" to requirement.

I don't know what part of the planet you live on, but i suppose i could be talked into copying a set..........
