79655 2002-09-15 08:14:00 On a Laptop I have recently bought there is Office 97 of which there is no disc and I do not wish to keep. I know it is also illegal. So how do I un-instal it . I have tried add and remove but that doesnt work. Do I need to do it through registry. It also has outlook which I also do not want. John Boy (1365)
79656 2002-09-15 08:37:00 When you say "add/remove" doesnt work, can you be more specific?

Microsoft Office 97 should show up in the list, what happens when you select it for removal?

Trying to remove it via the registry will be possible, but would require a supreme knowledge of the operating system, and not something I would ever attempt. Each part of Office will be embedded in the system.

If you have just got it, why don't you reformat and reload the operating system?

79657 2002-09-15 08:47:00 When I clicked to remove Office using add and remove it just stayed there. I did read somewhere that it might require the cd to remove it. As for reformatting. I have not being bold enough to try something like that and am reluctant to have a go. John Boy (1365)
79658 2002-09-15 09:00:00 Well, if you are not bold enough to reload windows, you won't want a bar of editing the registry! At least not for removing Office. It would be guaranteed to require you to reformat!

What CDs did you get with the laptop? If it has a "recovery" CD that will restore it to "ex factory" automatically. (well, nearly...)

79659 2002-09-15 09:14:00 Two cds One I think has win 95 the other has Win 98 as there was a choice of which you wanted. It is a laptop. Apparently when it was first used there was a choice. Once that choice was made it deleted the other. It is set up on win 98. John Boy (1365)
79660 2002-09-15 09:15:00 Backup the registry and then remove all references to Office, Word, Access etc.

Use the backup if something goes wrong.

Restart in DOS and remove the folder and contents of the msoffice folder

Do at you own risk.

Btw - removal of Office97 requires the CD or network drive location

79661 2002-09-15 09:17:00 Sorry, Yes recovery cds John Boy (1365)
79662 2002-09-15 09:18:00 OS choice was common on laptops, often Win 9x or Win NT

I really think your best bet is to start fresh with a reinstall of 98.
