80074 2002-09-16 11:04:00 Have a peer to peer network:
10PC's running Win95B with 3Com Etherlink 10m NIC
1 Pc running Win98SE with AcerLan ALN-325 10/100m NIC - used for central file saving, printing and internet access.
Using Cheetah 10baseT hub.

Problem is the data transfer rate from the Win95 machines back to the Win98 machine. Sometimes it takes several minutes to print or save a file - same file saved to another Win95 machine is quite quick. Outwardbound data transfers are fine.

Have tried different settings on Win98 NIC, different cables etc but no luck in solving problem.

Any help would be appreciated ?:|

80075 2002-09-16 11:15:00 In the spool settings ,get the 95 PCs to print directly to the printer so that they don't load the poor 98 PC with all the print job work
On the 98 PC - Create a second hardware profile and call it test. In device manager disable as much as you can (especially the modem) and leave the network card enabled
Start it up in the test profile and see if network response is improved. Turn on (via trial and error) any other devices that may be required to get a network connection or to get the PC going.
If network response improves then there is a resource problem
Is the W98 PC much newer than the W95PCs and does it have much more RAM than them?

80076 2002-09-16 22:33:00 Check your duplex settings on your NIC's. If they are different to the win98 machine, then yes you will get a considerable slowing down.

duplex settings are under the properties of your NIC

80077 2002-09-17 00:47:00 Thanks for your ideas .

The printing time did improve a bit after I changed the spool setting to RAW but is still quite slow to start printing .

The 3Com NIC’s don’t have any duplex settings to adjust and are automatically set to max transmission . I tried adjusting the Win98 NIC settings from auto right thru to half 10m but didn’t seem to make any difference .

I’m sorry I should have included the machine specs with my original query .

The Win98 machine is a Celeron 566mhz, 120mb ram .
Sharing:
- 2 CD drives - mapped as D & E
- modem - Gatekeeper proxy software
- printer – HP 810c Deskjet
- folder for central file saving on HD mapped as F
- Other shared folders with applications (eg e-books etc)

The other 10 Win95b PC are only P75 with 32mb ram .

Not sure that low resources are causing slow inward data transfers as on the whole the network works quite well . Win98 PC has no problem sharing all resources at same time – 2 different CD on the go, others accessing shared folders on HD (e-books etc), cruising the web etc

Problem only occurs with saving or printing to the Win98 machine .

Can’t figure out what I’ve got wrong .

Any further ideas?
