79951 2002-09-16 05:24:00 I want to network my Windows ME laptop with my Windows XP Home desktop computer.

The WinME machine has worked fine on other networks using it's PCMCIA network card, and already has TCP/IP, Netbeui and IPX/SPX installed.

The WinXP machine is brand new, so only has TCP/IP installed. However, I would have thought this would be enough, seeing as nothing more was added once I ran the 'Networking setup' wizard.

I want to network the two together using a crossover cable, not a network hub & regular cable. They both detect the network connection, but still can't see each other on the network. The laptop can recognise itself as belong to a workgroup, but the XP machine sees no computers in the workgroup. Yes, both have the same workgroup name.

Any ideas?

Open up your "Network Connections" window (in XP) and in the list on the left there should be an option like "Set up a home/small office network". If you click this it'll first set up XP for the small network, then it'll create a floppy disk (you'll need a blank one) that you put into the ME system and run, and it'll set everything up how it should be on that system so that the two can talk to each other. I've found this to work quite well when I've run it, but it's been a while since I last did it, so I might have missed something out :)

I find XP networking simplest of all.
