79942 2002-09-16 04:57:00 Hi there....does anybody know how to stop a new explorer window being opened up when you map a network drive other than holding down the shift key while you do it.....this is the thing in 2K and XP that annoys me the most :-) Any help would be great :-)

Cheers

79943 2002-09-16 05:06:00 The Knowledge Base article support.microsoft.com says that you can only hold down shift... there is no other way!

Try leaving the drive permanently mapped. If you need to re-map it in every session, it might pay to just leave it connected as a network drive, and deselecting "Logon and restore network connections" from the Network options. That way, you will only connect to the drive when you really need it. (Hopefully once the drive is already accessible)

79944 2002-09-16 05:19:00 The problem there is that I often use all available drive letters. I administrer a network with way too many shares on it and it is not feasable to have each drive on all the servers mapped all the time as there are not enough drive letters available......so you see my problem :-) and can probably understand my pain :-)

Usually when microsoft says there is no other way it usually means that there are but they don't to tell you about it........

Apparently it deals solely with managing mapped network drives.

79946 2002-09-16 05:37:00 I hope this offers some kind of clue

When i had my machine on a network a few years back, the network saw the resourses that i shared as something like

Vanessa//C:/sharedfolder

That long winded name showed up in much the same way as a mapped drive letter would

We had an NT server, and the rest of the machines were a mongrel mix, Vanessa was, and still is win98
