| 80608 | 2002-09-18 05:54:00 | Advice please on the CORRECT disposal of OLD scaps of hardware, eg:- A: power cables B: various communications cables C: 2 x 28.8k modems and cables (no software) D: 386 pcs (not necessarily "working") E: base stations for original laptops F: HDDs G: various circuit boards H: backup tapes various sizes I: tape backup unit, external There are just a few bits and pieces but I do NOT necessarily want to dump hazardous waste in the normal dumpster |

| 80613 | 2002-09-18 06:34:00 | It is a real problem knowing whether to dispose of items at the local tip, and not just computer parts either, and what & how to go about it. Some tips operate recycle programs, our local Hutt Valley one doesnt, neither does it allow salvage. When I asked how to dispose of junk monitors, the answer was just throw them in. There is a local firm that will take circuit boards, presumably to reclaim gold from the contacts, but I dont know what happens to them subsequently. There must be an awful lot of lead being dumped. I'm sure local councils could do much more in this regard to educate the public on disposal, be involved in reclaiming and rendering harmless etc, rather than just raising tip fees to discourage waste disposal. |
