2002-09-19 12:57:00 | Hi Tweakie, On the "good" machine I'm running the latest ZA Pro and just watched the traffic over the network on bootup. So it still looks for home via DNS. I had hoped to check the idea about the update, but the **** of a computer has once again decided to have a rest. Wanders off muttering darkly about hammers...............

2002-09-19 14:01:00 | Thanks guys, a lot of help from you all. In regard to 'other programs requesting access' well, I'm not sure yet! but, when I 'connect' we don't *go* anywhere, just connects to my ISP. Regarding if it's ZA doing the 'ask', I've tried 'un-ticking' the 2 instances of ZA in 'startup' msconfig, they being. TrueVector (VSMON.EXE) & ZoneAlarm Pro (ZAPRO.EXE) & when that is done (& a reboot) the problem goes away ! also did the doings in 'add/remove programs & once again the problem goes away, so, it seems to me that it's definitely a ZA thing ... However, it's late, I've been to the MSP $100 ticket night (was shouted) didn't win anything, but the food & the amber liquids went down very well, hence the somewhat disjointed reply to you all ! ... Tomorrow's another day, will do more research, such as read the FAQs on the ZA site, maybe even send them an email ... Watch this space (as they say) Regards & thanks to all Dunk.

2002-09-20 10:06:00 | Dunk, The reason your PC connects to your ISP is because that is the address you have set up in your internet options for DNS servers. Zone Alarm sends a DNS query for the IP address of lockup.zonelabs.com as soon as your operating system has loaded. I have disabled the auto update feature, but it still does the DNS request.

2002-09-21 03:33:00 | I 'un-ticked' the two options referred to when I configured ZA so that one's taken care of. Have emailed ZA with the problem & had the auto-response reply, a test of their *actual* service response is awaited with bated breath! ... I wonder if they'll give me my money back if I send it back to them ... Yeah right!! Bugger!

2002-09-21 22:43:00 | Not just an issue with "PRO" version. I got a message advising a new version 3.1.395 was available (free-B). I have been quite happy with peformance and no bugs in my experience so installed. Using WIN98SE. BUT Same symptoms as documented here Backed out and re-installed previous version. LESSON: Always let someone else check thin ice.
