| 80285 | 2002-09-17 06:56:00 | Did you know that the web is a great resource for free chess stuff? Software, magazines, tips etc . . ? Well, this is the problem . (Not major) but am slightly frustrated, that the fact I can't seem to find at least a decent chess game that is free . Have visited heaps of websites, and have found that some seem to promote that it is free, when actually, it turns out to be for a "limited time" or a "demo" or even "online" or a program that someone has developed, that has no relation to a chess game . Wheres the traditional and the original , old fashioned chess games? Have I been in the closet too long? If so, what chess games are widely used? Can anyone out there, know of a site that does offer some free chess games, that doesnt require me to be online all the time just to use it . It seems these days, that most of games are shifting to online activities . Too much online activities, may increase more holes in my pocket . . . I ain't interested to chatting to some ole fool on the other side of the world, while playing chess! |

Dear Godfather . . . . . Indeed I have tried almost every avenue to at least find a decent free chess game . Most of the sites that I have visited, all end up linking back to the previous site, or other links which I have already travelled . Meanwhile, it possibly seems though that 100, 000 sites so far already seen, probably explains why Im still in circles . However, I do use Google as my default search engine, and have tried the following search topics: Free Chess Chess Free chess games chess 2000 chess windows but i yet to try "stand-alone chess games" . Still, I am assuming that the links will still re-direct to sites I have already visited . |

| 80291 | 2002-09-17 10:16:00 | Sand, you may get better results with free chess download as a search string. I found some straight off that were stand-alone and free, but never went as far as trying them, only confirmed the links were live and the download available. But, remember there is truly no such thing as a free lunch. Or chess program, as all may have some quirks. I do know there were some good apps for Palm Pilot or PocketPC Windows 2002 |

| 80293 | 2002-09-17 11:43:00 | Hi Sandy Beach. I used to have a small chess program that was stand alone & free. Didnt even need an install so was good for playing at work (no trace left on the PC he he). Cant bloody find it now though but if I do I will let you know the name. If you decide to fork out the readies in frustration theres quite a few bargain bin releases of games and you may be able to pick one up cheap. I recommend Extreme Chess if you see it - this came with Sierra's Complete Chess (actually 3 chess programs) which I got this for < $40 a couple of months ago. Was a good deal :-) |

So there is that online component you wanted to avoid... I may have a look in my archived links... I am sure I have a link to a really good chess program somewhere | flying_green_leprachaun (1767) | ||
