2002-09-19 07:53:00 | Quite write Mike. But it's one standard that so many people have "improved" that I suppose I left the Standard out subconsciously. The worst was one Commodore perpetrated, usually referred to as "Pet ASCII" (used in the Pet 4k "computers". I used stronger language when I expressed my opinion. | Graham L (2) | |

I see that the site you quoted gives a bit more info. and puts the year as 1972: In 1972 Franklin Loufrani, a journalist, created a simple concept for European newspapers, sideways type icons to communicate emotions--emoticons. He gave his original icon :) the name of "Smiley". Smiley quickly spread across the world. Other emoticons followed Smiley. Cheers. :) |

2002-09-20 06:33:00 | So it's actually 30 years old? Sounds more like it. There are cellphones that can do emoticons now. <sigh> | robo (205) | |
2002-09-20 07:27:00 | Rob, get with it. Cellphones have been doing graphical moticons for a few years now. But they only tend to work on similar phones ie not cross platform compatible... | SoniKalien (792) | |
2002-09-20 14:31:00 | It seems that Smiley was 20yrs old after all, not 30yrs. (See posting Friday Nite News) Refer CNN Site (www.cnn.com)
